1. The Brennan family quietly leave their town in the early hours of the morning. What clues are we given as to why the Brennan family were leaving?
2. List the members of the Brennan family.
3. How does the narrator feel about leaving?

Chapter 1

1. ‘my grandmother, a self-appointed messenger of God’ (3). What does this suggest about the Grandmother’s personality?
2. How long had Tom and his family been staying at his grandmother’s house?
3. Describe the way the grandmother treats each member of the family. What is her attitude in regards to Daniel?
4. Which community member attended lunch at the grandmother’s house? Why did he visit?
5. What do we learn about Tom during his conversation with Father Vincent?
6. Why was Tom reluctant to play in the touch footy game that afternoon?
7. ‘We’re all hurting. It’s not helping anyone being like this’ (11). Why does the grandmother have so little compassion for her daughter’s pain?
8. Describe the emotions each character is feeling at the end of the chapter.
