GARIEPY FAMILY

"The Gariepy surname is found primarily in France as early as the year 1630. In the coat of arms, the color Azure (blue) symbolizes Loyalty and Truth. Various spellings have been found for the name including: Garriepy, Garypie, Garapy, Garrabe, etc. Garrabe, Garaboux, and Garabiol are believed to also be a variant spelling form of this surname." The name means "one who lives by the Roses", according to the copy of the coat of arms.

NOTE: No records prior to his marriage have been found as of yet. It has also been brought to my attention that one of his daughters, Sopha Gariepy Voules, stated that Francis arrived in Titusville, Pennsylvania on July 4, 1860 from Montreal, Canada. And that Philancia Langdon arrived on April 3, 1848 from Edinburg, Ireland. I will continue to work on confirming this information where ever it might lead.

1. Shows on 1870 Federal Census in Oil Creek Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania with wife Philancy and son Frances.

2. 1880 Federal Census in Oil Creek Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania: Gariepy, Frank at age 40, oil well driller, says that he is from France and both parents are also from France. Wife: Filancy age 33, son: Frank age 11, son: John age 10, son: Charley age 5, son: Joseph age 3, son Joel age 3, and a not named son (Robert Edward) age 2 months.

3. 1900 Federal Census in Rome Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania. Shown as Gariepy, Francis born 3/1835 and his nationality is Canada French, both parents from France, became a citizen in 1858, and is an oil driller. Wife: Philancia birthdate 4/1868 age 52, son Herbert C age 18, daughter Sophia age 14, son Mirle age 12, son And age 9, and daughter Pearl G age 8.

1. GARIEPY, Francis Alexander--Born on January 2, 1869 in Pennsylvania. Married Ada DENNIS on September 11, 1897 and had 12 children. Ada was born June 23, 1874 in Hancock County, Ohio and died on June 12, 1960 and is buried in Maple Grove Cemetary, Finlay, Ohio. Then married Tinnie Emma Teague sometime after 1920. Francis died on December 31, 1939 in Kilgore, Texas and is buried in Dublin.

1. 1910 Federal Census in Stoy Village, Crawford County, Illinois. Shows Frank Gariepy at age 42 as a Superintendent on an Oil lease. Also shown with him: wife Ada age 36, son Clarence age 16, son Francis age 14, son Emery age 13, son Merten age 12, daughter Edna age 10, daughter Bernice age 4, daughter Mildred age 2, daughter Margurite age , son Paul age 12 months, and father Frank age 69.

2. 1920 Federal Census for South Bend, Fulton County, Georgia.

3. 1930 Fedral Census in District 7, Precinct 2, Stephens County, Texas along with wife Tinnie and children Bill and Ilene.

FACT: 1920 Federal Census for Findlay, Hancock County, Ohio. Shows Ada Gariepy age 45 living with son Emery Gariepy age 23.

NOTE: Had a relationship with Loy Ransford and had two children with her.

NOTE: Had two children with Emma.

2. GARIEPY, John Henry--Born February 23, 1872 in PA. Married Anna TAYLER on December 25, 1890 in Findlay, Ohio and had 6 known children. He died on August 12, 1951 in Bridgeport, Illinois.

FACT:

1920 Federal Census for Bridgeport, Lawrence County, Illinois. Shown as John Garriepy age 46 and a worker for Ohio Oil Company. Wife Anna age 44 and son Conway age 13 also shown.

1930 Federal Census, District 4, Bridgeport, Lawrence County, Illinois along with wife Anna.

3. GARIEPY, George Nathaniel--Born May 19, 1873 and died July 4, 1874 in Pennsylvania.

NOTE: Cause of death was a fall down the stairs attributed by Spinal menigitis.

4. GARIEPY, Charles Andrew--Born May 21, 1875 in PA and died June 11, 1920 in Denver, CO.

FACT: 1920 Federal Census for Oblong, Crawford County, Illinois. Shown as Cherly Gariphy age 45 and a laborer for the Oil field. Wife Mabel age 37, son Glann age 15, daughter Gale age 13, son Charly age 7 and father in law John Barnard age 69 also living with him.

Family descendents believe that he may have died in Wyoming of turberculosis.

His widow shows on the 1930 Federal Census in District 4, Lusk, Niobrara County, Wyoming with new husband Frank C. Boutch and children Betty P. and Betty L. Boutch, Glen B. Gariepy, Gail Gariepy, and C. William Gariepy.

5. GARIEPY, Joseph Conley--Born November 22, 1877 in East Titusville, PA. Married Kathleen (last name not known) and had 6 children. He died on June 6, 1960 and is buried in St. Hippolyte's Cemetary, Frenchtown, PA.

FACT: 1920 Federal Census for Titusville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania. Shown as Joseph Garriepy age 42 and a foreman on a Section of the Railroad. Wife Winifred, son Arthur age 18, son Edward age 16, son Leo age 15, daughter Carrie age 12, daughter Crestie age 11, and daughter Pearl age 9 also listed with him.

1930 Federal Census, District 54, Titusville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania along with wife Winifred, son Gus, daughter-in-law Alice, granchildren Margaret, Virginia, and Marjorie.

6. GARIEPY, JOEL RAY--Born November 22, 1877 (twin to Joseph). Married Vinnie Grace POST in Pennsylvania. Died December 11, 1962 in Borger, TX.

1. 1910 Federal Census for Stoy Village, Crawford, Illinois. Shown as Joel Girrpy age 30 being a blacksmith with his own shop. Wife Vinnie age 29, son Chase A age 9, daughter Susie age 7, son Glen age 5, son Guy age 3, and son Harvey age 1 also living with him.

2. 1920 Federal Census for Petty, Lawrence County, Illinois. Shown as Joe Gariepy age 40 as a driller for Ohio Oil Company. Wife Vinnie age 38, son Glen age 14, son Guy age 12, son Harvey age 10, daughter Ida M age 8, daughter Ruby age 6, son Willard age 4 1/2, daughter Mabel age 2 1/2, and daughter Helen age 7 months also shown.

7. GARIEPY, Robert Edward--Born April 13, 1880 in PA. He married Bessie May WILSON. They had five children. Died on April 1, 1938 in Rockport, Indiana.

FACT: 1920 Federal Census for Center, Carroll County, Ohio. Shown as Robert E. Garripie age 39 as a foreman for the oil wells. Wife Bessie M age 36, son Theodore age 17, daughter Edrie V. age 15, daughter Audrie G. age 14, son Robert age 8, and son Archie P. age 8 months also shown.

1930 Federal Census for Fairbanks, Sullivan County, Indiana along with wife Bessie and children Clifford and Archie.

8. GARIEPY, Herbert Clyde--Born on April 20, 1882 in PA. Married Lois (last name unknown). Died on July 25, 1935 in Paoli, Indiana.

FACT: Shown in the 1910 Federal Census in Petty, Lawrence County, Illinois at age 26 and a tool dresser for the oil fields. Wife Lois age 18 also shown with him.

9. GARIEPY, Sophia--Born October 1, 1885 in Pennsylvania. Sophia married Carl Eugene Culver on October 2, 1922 at the courthouse in Meadville, Pennsylvania. They had one known child, Essie Leona Culver. She later married a Frank G. Brown according to a small newspaper clipping that has been shared with me. Sophia also married a Mr. Voules and lived in Graham, Texas. She died on July 30, 1969 in Stephens County, Texas.

10. GARIEPY, Myrl Martin--Born April 15, 1888 in PA. Married Dorothy (last name unknown) and had one child. Died on November 20, 1984 in Pennsylvania.

1. 1910 Federal Census for Crawford County, Pennsylvania. Shown as Myrl M. Gariepy age 22 with wife Doroty age 19.

2. 1920 Federal Census for Steuben, Crawford County, Pennsylvania. Shown as Merl Gariepy age 30 as a foreman for RailRoad. Wife Dorthy age 28 and daughter Florence age 8 also shown.

1930 Federal Census for District 45, Steuben, Crawford, Pennsylvania with wife Dorothy and daughter Florence.

NOTE: Myrl Gariepy also had a relationship with a Dolly Lewis and had two children with her.

11. GARIEPY, Fred (Ted)--Born June 20, 1890 in PA. Married Ruth TANNER and had one known child. Died on January 28, 1969 in Benton, Illinois.

12. GARIEPY, Pearl Ethel Virginia--Born May 17, 1892 in Pennsylvania. Married Roland PLOTTS on October 16, 1909 in Findlay, Ohio. They had 5 children. She died on December 3, 1977 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Breese, Illinois and on December 6, 1977 she was cremated and her ashes were buried at Hillcrest Cemetary in Centralia, Illinois.
