Meeting with the Future

Part 1

While Lorelei is in New York for a meeting with the Durham Group, who wants to make her a consultant, she stops at a coffee shop in the Village. When she has her coffee in hand she looks around for a table and spies a gentleman sitting at a table alone. He sees her looking around and motions her to come over to his table.

He is a multi cultural businessman dressed in suit pants with a double breasted coat which is open revealing a striped shirt and tie, but the tie looks as though he has just loosened it to relax. He is about 6’3, hazel eyed and built like a GQ model. His paper-sack tan skin and wavy dark brownish auburn hair contrasts beautifully with his eyes. Lorelei is mesmerized and for the first times she is speechless.
“Oh, thanks for the seat I thought I might have to stand by the door.”
“My name is Lorelei,” she says putting out her hand to shake his.
“I am Joshua,” he says holding her hand while looking into her startling blue eyes.

They chat about New York and the Village. Lorelei tells Joshua all about Stars Hollow and Rory. She doesn’t mention her fiancé, Luke. After coffee, Joshua asks her to dinner. She accepts. They walk to a restaurant on the same street.
“So many buildings, not enough green spaces I don’t know if I could ever get used it,” she gushes.
“I know I am from the Midwest and this can be a little overwhelming at times,” he adds.
“So you are an investment banker?” she asks.
“Yes, my building is just on the other side of the street.”
“Great and you live around here, right?”
“Not too far.”
“I’m sorry I wasn’t inviting myself over I was just thinking how much gas money you would save if you live in the area.”
“Yes, it was good for a while but I just closed on a house in the suburbs,” he adds.
“Congratulations.”
She raises her wine glass to clink to his. They laugh.

He tells her all about his new home; a Tudor with four bedrooms a pool and two and half baths. He is considering inviting his mom to come live with him, since she lives alone.
“So how does you girlfriend feel about this?”
“I am not dating at the moment,” he answers.”
“Sorry, once again my foot goes in my mouth.”
He smiles at her expression of disgust at herself.
“Not to worry, you’re not being graded,” he laughs.

After dinner they take a walk in the park and there he asks for her phone number. She gives him the phone number without hesitating. Then when they get back he helps her to get a cab. They say there goodbyes and he kisses on the cheek.
In the car, she calls Sookie and tells her the whole story.
“He is gorgeous, intelligent, funny; what was I thinking spending time with him?”
“Yea, did you forget about Luke?”
“No, but I am so attracted to this guy.’
“I don’t know what I am going to do Sookie, he wants to see me again and I gave him my number.”
After she hangs up with Sookie she calls Luke to tell him she is on the way back. He doesn’t ask any questions simply assuming she was sightseeing.

Knowing she is being unfair to Luke Lorelei is restless, and she is sure Luke knows something is wrong. She has begun to spend fewer nights with him because of her guilty conscience. Yet, he is so busy with other things he never questions her about what is bothering her.

Two nights after her return to Stars Hollow from New York, Joshua calls her and they talked for three hours. During the call they made plans to meet at a halfway point the following week for dinner and a movie. She had spoken with Sookie after that call and Sookie was so upset that she had let this happen.
“Break up with Luke, it is only fair, I do not believe you are letting this go on even for a day,” she says before she hangs up on her.
Lorelei is in shock but she knows Sookie is right. That night she called Luke but he had been in such a good mood she hadn’t had the heart to tell him.

Now only one day before she is going to meet Joshua she still hasn’t told him.
“You have to do this,” she says to herself as she stands outside the diner.
Luke smiles as he sees her talking to herself outside the door. She walks in determined.
“Luke, we need to talk.” She adds a smile for good measure.

Luke pulls her over to the side and crosses his arms over his chest.
“Yes,” he says with a grin.
She takes a deep breath.
“I want to call off our engagement.”
He blinks.
“What? Why?”
“I am having second thoughts and desires for other men, there I said it.”
She turns around to leave and he stops her. She faces him starting to tear up. He leads her to his office apartment. She collapses in the chair crying. In a few moments she has calmed herself.
“I’m sorry, it has to be this way,” she says wiping her eyes with a tissue.

Luke looks at her for several long moments.
“You met someone in New York didn’t you?”
She nods.
“I didn’t mean to.”
“If he cares for you, you shouldn’t be sorry.”
“I do love you Luke, but I am beginning to feel it is more of a brotherly love.”
“Don’t worry except for the sex; I believe that could possibly be mutual.”
“Huh,” she says not sure she is hearing him right.

He explains how over the years that he had loved her there were times she seemed to be depending on him more than others. Usually, when she wasn’t dating anyone. Somehow when she asked him to marry him, he had hoped it was out of affection instead of out of desperation. However this current situation shows it was the latter. “It is the not so much the romantic kind of love we have going, but more a relative thing, right?”
“I think that sums it up, I am so sorry,” she adds.
After she leaves Luke cries for a very long time.
