"Matters of the Heart"

Chapter 2

Alone with his thoughts once again, he decided to wait until the clothes were finished drying to take another try at sleeping. He went to the laundry room and sat up on the washing machine listening to the steady humming of the dryer. The vibrations slowly began to rock him to sleep until he realized he shouldn't fall asleep there. Lying down with his head on the dryer and his body on the washer, he began to think of the girl who was sleeping only a few rooms away from him. What was it that fate had in store for the two of them? It was clear that it was fate that brought them together… but what was to come was not clear at all. Slowly the vibrations started making him sleepy again, and sooner than he realized it, he had fallen asleep.
"BBBUUUZZZZZZZ." Brian shot up like a rocket, his heart racing and he kept searching around as if there was an ongoing war. "Damn dryer," he mumbled to himself as he hopped off the washer and dug into the dryer to remove the clothes. He took them out and dropped them into a clothesbasket. He took out Rebecca's, folded them up, and then headed towards "her" room. He quietly opened the door being careful not to make any noise and sat her clothes on the dresser.
"Hey Brian," she said and he jumped out of his skin. He turned around with his hand over his heart and saw her sitting on the edge of the bed. She cracked a small smile. "Sorry I scared you."
"It's ok, I enjoy having my heart jump-started all the time. Still can't sleep?"
"Nope, but it's not anything I'm not used to. I've barely slept at all since…" her face fell, and her eyes stung with tears. He walked over and knelt down in front of her. He lifted his hand up to her cheek and she leaned into his hand. "I'm sorry," she whispered.
"Hey, you have nothing to be sorry for, you haven't done anything wrong. I'm here for you Bec, in every way possible."
Their eyes were locked on each other. She was holding her breath, and his heart was pounding. She'd never felt this way before, and it had been a very long time since he'd felt that kind of intensity. He did the only thing he could think of to do next. Lifting himself up some, he brushed his lips against hers gently to see if she was going to pull away. When she didn't he moved closer, kissing deeper, and she wrapped her arms around him feeling the strong muscles in his bare back. They remained like that for a minute, scared that any movement would ruin the moment. He got uncomfortable in that position so he pushed a little, and she slid back on the bed. He crawled up on top of her and they stared into each other's eyes again. He could see the passion, that fire burning in her eyes; the same thing was showing in his own. As soon as their lips touched again something in his head started screaming that this was wrong. He wanted to ignore it, he tried so hard to ignore it, but she felt so good… so right, yet so wrong at the same time. He tried to break off the kiss and say her name, but the only thing that came out was a soft moan. He felt his eyes start to sting with tears, but he tried to shake it off. It was a losing battle between his head and his heart. His heart was saying this was right, so he went with it. His heart had never failed him before… well not with something like that. His breath kept catching and he knew that it was the point of no return.
Brian only slept about two hours before he was awake yet again with Rebecca sleeping peacefully in his arms. He couldn't help but smile as he softly traced the contours of her face with his fingertips. Reality was beginning to set in and he knew he'd have to produce an explanation. This was way beyond normal behavior for him. No one would expect Brian, the innocent good one, to do something like this. But he had been anything but "normal" in a long time… normal didn't even make sense to him anymore. The honest truth was that there wasn't an explanation for his actions. Maybe it's love, but he wasn't sure of that yet… love didn't seem to be the right word at the moment, but he knew he cared strongly for her and that he wanted to be with her. His thoughts were interrupted bye her quiet voice mumbling his name and a half smile spread across her lips. He smiled to himself again, kissed her forehead, then drifted of to sleep.
