"Matters of the Heart"

Chapter 5

The car ride to her house started out in an awkward silence. Neither of them knew what to say. The silence became too much, so Rebecca turned on the radio. She accidentally turned it up really loud, startling Brian out of his thoughts and causing him to jerk the car and they swerved into the other lane. She stifled back a laugh as he brought the car back into the proper lane. "Sorry," she said.
"You're just trying to give me a heart attack, aren't you?"
"No, I'm sorry."
"It's ok, but we are not listening to this," he said changing the station to an R&B station. She gave him a hell no look, then changed it again. "Excuse you."
"We're not listening to that either."
"Um, whose car is it? Who is driving?"
"Who cares?" she said putting her hand over the dial so he couldn't change it again.
"Move your hand."
"No, you're not changing the station anymore. Just drive and don't pay attention to the radio."
"Ok fine, you win."
"Ok, I'm going to move my hand, but you better not take your hands off the steering wheel." She slowly took her hand away and watched him to make sure he wasn't going to try anything. When she was convinced that he wasn't going to do anything, she sat back and looked out the window. Faith Hill's song "Breathe" came on and it just kind of fit with them. Brian turned the volume up and filled the car with her words.

"I can feel the magic floating in the air, being with you gets me that way
I watch the sunlight dance across your face and I
Oh I've never been this swept away…"

Brian glanced over at Rebecca, who was staring out the window. Her eyes were shining, and at that moment, she was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen.

"In a way I know my heart is waking up, as all the walls come tumbling down
Closer than I've ever felt before and I know and you know
There's no need for words right now…"

Rebecca looked at Brian, and he looked at her. He smiled and took her hand in his, squeezing it lovingly. He brought her hand up to his face and kissed the top of it. There was no need for words then, there were no words to express what they were feeling. The song said it all.

"And I can feel you breathe, it's washing over me
Suddenly I'm melting into you
There's nothing left to prove, baby all we need is just to be
Caught in the touch, the slow and steady rush
And baby, isn't that the way that love's supposed to be
I can feel you breathe
Just breathe…"
