Chapter 6
They still hadn't spoken when they pulled into her driveway. She was slow to get out of the car, and Brian rushed to be by her side taking hold of her hand again. She unlocked the front door and they went inside. She gave him a tour of the house, which was a really nice one in fact. When they came back downstairs the light on the answering machine was blinking so she checked the messages. The first 4 were hang-ups, then there were two from an aunt, and the last one really hit hard. It was from her parent's lawyer calling about the reading of her dad's will. Before the message was even finished playing Rebecca had broken down. She fell onto her knees with her face buried in her hands, bawling like a baby. Brian fell next to her, putting his arms around her, trying to comfort her the best he could. She kept repeating over and over that it wasn't fair, and that they didn't deserve to die. He was at a loss as to what to do so he just held her and rocked her, trying to let her know that things would be ok again. After a while her sobs quieted down some, and then she became silent. Brian looked and saw that she had cried herself to sleep. He gently stood up, lifting her up in his arms, and carried her up to her bedroom. He softly kissed her cheek then went back downstairs and crashed on the couch because he didn't want to leave her alone.
Brian woke up a few hours later and found her cuddled up next to him. He didn't remember her coming downstairs or anything, but he didn't care. He put his arms around her and drifted off to sleep again.
Rebecca woke up to the smell of food drifting in from the kitchen. She stood up, stretched, then followed the smell to the kitchen. Brian was standing in front of the stove with a cup of coffee in hand. He turned around and saw her come in the room. He smiled, sat his cup on the counter, and greeted her with a small kiss.
"Feeling better?" he asked.
"Yeah. I can't believe you're cooking at 2 in the morning."
"We didn't eat anything all day so why not? Hey, when did you change clothes?" he asked admiring her sun, moon, and star pajamas.
"Before I came downstairs to the couch. Do you have a problem with what I'm wearing?" she asked with a half smile.
"No not at all." He put his arms around her and pulled her in for a nice, long kiss. She broke off laughing. "What's so funny?"
"French toast tastes a lot better when it's not burnt."
Brian turned to the stove and saw his breakfast burning. "Aww damn. See I was doing fine until you came in here. This is your fault."
"How is it my fault?"
"You had to come in here being all cute in your tank-top and shorts pajamas, and you distracted me from what I was doing."
"You're just mad because you can't cook," she teased pulling out a bowl of strawberries and a tub of whipped cream out of the refrigerator. She sat up on the counter while Brian threw the burnt french toast in the trash. "Just make regular toast, and I'll fix some eggs when I finish my strawberries."
Brian put two pieces of bread in the toaster and stood in front of her taking a berry out of the bowl and popping it into his mouth. "They're better with whipped cream," she said.
Brian stuck his finger in the whipped cream and dabbed it on her nose. "Um, Bec you have something on your nose there…" He laughed until she did the same thing to him. "That wasn't cool. Take this," he said smearing some on her cheek.
"Oh no you did not."
"Oh yes I did."
"Well fine then I'm just gonna have to do this," she said putting cream on both of his cheeks and smearing it all around. He retaliated by putting a big glob on her forehead, but she won the fight when she scooped up all she could into her hands and smashed it into his face. She started laughing as he wiped it away from his eyes, not saying anything. "I'm sorry… you started it. Here…" She got a dish towel, wet it and cleaned off his face, then her own. "See now look what you did, you wasted all of my whipped cream."
"What about those eggs?" Brian asked moving away so she could get down.
"Coming right up."
After eating a small meal, they cleaned the kitchen then went upstairs to her bedroom. Brian lay on the bed Rebecca went to take a shower. She was amazed at how good he made her feel at such a terrible time in her life. She almost felt bad about being happy. While in the shower she thanked God for bringing him into her life when she needed someone the most, and she had no idea that Brian was doing the same thing. When she got out of the shower, dressed back in her pajamas, and dried her hair she went out into her room and found Brian asleep again. She turned out the lights and crawled into bed next to him.
