“Tomorrow’s Promise”

Chapter 1
The screams and yells from the house became louder as Kevin, AJ, Gina and Lauren made their way up the walkway to the front door of Brian's place. Foul language and bitterness rose in the air as they came nearer and nearer. It had been a year later and Brian was still with Rebecca. They had moved in together after Nick had moved out and today was their one-year anniversary.
"Damn, they sound worse than we do, sweetie," Gina grabbed a hold of Kevin's hand as he was about to ring the doorbell.
"See I don't understand it when a couple fights. Me and my baby never fight," AJ turned to his girlfriend of over a year. "I love you baby girl," AJ leaned in and kissed Lauren.
"Oh please. I would like to eat before I throw up. It hurts when nothing comes out, you know?" Gina rolled her eyes at the happy couple.
Kevin's fingers were a few seconds away from ringing the bell when the door swung open. Rebecca was in tears when she greeted her friends unexpectedly. "What are you guys doing here?"
Lauren pushed AJ and Kevin aside and ran up to Rebecca. "Oh my gosh! We came for your anniversary party. Are you okay?" She put her arm around her friend and gave her a hug. Gina turned and slapped Kevin's chest.
"What did I do?" Kevin looked at Gina with surprise.
"You... you... oh, shut-up. You're a guy and you deserved it!" Gina ran to Rebecca and gave her a hug.
Lauren looked inside the house for Brian. "Where is that little prick?"
In between sobs, "He's in the bedroom."
Lauren marched into the house, up the stairs to see Brian sitting on the edge of the bed, crying. "What did you do to Bec?"
Brian turned around and looked at Lauren. "We had a fight alright? Every couple has fights, but you wouldn't know would you? You and AJ live in a world of happiness." Brian marched past Lauren and into the kitchen to get a glass of water.
Kevin was already into the food that was laid out on the table. "Hey man." Kevin grabbed a handful of carrots and walked towards his cousin. "What's going on between you and Rebecca?"
Keeping his voice low to avoid Kevin's girlfriend from butting in, "We've just been fighting lately and now it's just getting out of hand. It hurts so bad to know that I'm part of the reason the Becky cries." Brian looked at Kevin with tears about to fall from his eyes, "How do you stand it?"
Kevin stopped eating and looked at Brian. "Why do people always think that I just fight with my girlfriend?!?" His voice rose as he spoke.
Gina's head popped into the kitchen, "'Cause we do fight most of the time."
"We do not!"
"Thank you! You just proved my point," Gina returned to Rebecca who was sitting on the couch still crying. "Aw, it's ok babe. What did he bitch about today?"
Rebecca looked up and wiped her eyes, "I was late making one payment on my car and he just went off on me. I don't know what's going on between us anymore. It just feels like he wants to leave but won't. It's like I'm making him stay with me."
Lauren joined the others on the couch. She turned towards the kitchen and yelled at Brian, "Brian, you're a big, big meanie!"
“That’s telling him Lauren,” Gina said with small laugh.
“You’d think that today of all days he’d be the Brian that I fell in love with, but no this shit has to happen. I don’t know how much longer I can take this. I can’t take all of this fighting and crying… it just hurts too much…” she broke down again and bawled into her hands. Gina and Lauren exchanged glances. They didn’t know what to say this time. They rubbed Rebecca’s back trying to soothe her a little even though they knew the only thing that could possibly make her feel better was Brian.
Brian heard his girlfriend’s sobs in the kitchen and his heart ached. He loved her more than his life itself, and the one thing he hated the most was hearing her cry. He got up from the table and made his way out to the living room where the girls were. Gina and Lauren glared at him as he got closer to them. “Can you two leave us alone for a minute please?” Brian asked.
“Why? So you can make her cry even more?” Gina asked standing up.
“Gina, it’s ok,” Rebecca said not looking up. She stuck her tongue out at Brian and she and Lauren went into the kitchen with Kevin and AJ.
Brian sat down next to her, his head handing low. “I’m sorry baby… I’m so sorry,” he said with a crack in his voice from holding back his tears.
Rebecca looked up from crying and stared at Brian. "I know you are, but do you constantly want to argue with me."
"I don't always want to fight. I love you, you know that right?" Brian rubbed her back to give her reassurance. "I don't want to fight anymore."
Rebecca leaned into Brian and laid her head on his shoulder. She stopped crying for the moment and closed her eyes. Brian ran his hands through her hair and kissed the top of her head.
"Aw, they kissed and made up! That's so special!" AJ had come out of the kitchen and was watching from the living room doorway.
"AJ get your ass back in here," Lauren's hand popped out of the door and grabbed his arm, pulling him back in.
Rebecca let out a soft laugh. She sat up and turned to Brian. "No more fights?"
Brian shook his head, "No fights."
"Then let's party!" Gina ran out of the kitchen with a glass of Jack in her hands. Brian kissed Rebecca softly on her cheek. They got up and joined their friend's on their anniversary.
Nick, his girlfriend Hannah, and Howie came in just as Gina said that. “Hey guys, we didn’t miss anything did we?” Nick asked.
Everyone exchanged looks and Brian spoke up, “No man, you didn’t miss anything worth talking about,” he looked at Rebecca, she nodded, and the party officially started.
