“Tomorrow’s Promise”

Chapter 11
Brian took a quick shower before going back to Rebecca’s room. When he got in there Gina, Lauren, and Hannah were watching TV.
“You’re back early. How was the show?” Gina asked.
“It was interesting. I broke down in front of like twenty thousand people, but no big deal.”
“Are you serious? What happened?” Lauren asked turning the TV off.
“It was during ‘Don’t Wanna Lose You Now’. I just lost it.”
“Aw Brian,” Gina said and gave him a hug. “You look tired so we’ll leave you now so you can get some sleep.”
“Thanks. Are you coming in the morning?”
“Of course.”
“Ok, see you then.” The three of them said bye and left Brian alone.
He sat down and took Rebecca’s hand in his, kissing her finger where her ring was supposed to be. “I’m sorry I had to leave you, but all of that’s over now, and I’m not leaving you again. I did what I said I was going to do. The whole time I sang to you, hoping that some how, some way you could maybe hear me. I got the fans on your side too, and they’re going to be praying for you… I don’t know how much longer I can take this…”
A few more tears fell from his already red puffy eyes, and they fell onto her hand. He wiped them away. “I should be out of tears by now, but nope they just keep falling like there’s no tomorrow… Baby you have to snap out of this soon. The doctor said if you don’t then you may never wake up.”
He laid his head next to hers and buried his face in the pillow. “I miss you so much. I miss your smile, I miss hearing you laugh at my stupid jokes, I miss kissing you and holding you… I miss everything. I know you can hear me now, I know you can. Come back to me. I love you so much…” Brian stopped when he felt something wet hit the side of his face. He looked up and saw the tear streaks coming from her eyes. “Bec, Oh my God. You can hear me, can’t you? Come on, baby wake up. Squeeze my hand if you can hear me.” It took a second but he felt the light squeeze on his hand. “Thank you God! I have to get the doctor.” Brian ran out into the hall and called for a doctor. One ran up to him and seeing the tears that Brian was crying thought the worst had happened, but it was the total opposite. “I asked her to squeeze my hand if she could hear me and she did it, and she was crying.”
“This is great news. This shows that she’s coming out of the coma. If she’s awake it shouldn’t be long until she opens her eyes, but she could be sleeping, that’s not uncommon. Just keep talking to her and she’ll come around soon enough, but when she does, do not let her move. Come and get me and I’ll deal with her.”
“Thank you doctor,” Brian said then sat down again. He caressed her face and continued to talk to her, begging for her to open her eyes. It took almost thirty minutes before he got another reaction from her. She squeezed his hand again the same as before and she let out a slight moan. “Come on baby girl, now all you have to do is open your eyes. Please… look at me.” Her eyes twitched a few times before opening very slowly. They closed right back again because of the light so he turned them down some. “Look at me,” he said again and she opened her eyes some. Brian almost passed out right then and there. He cried yet again, but this time they were tears of joy and happiness. “Welcome back,” he whispered with a smile. “I’ve missed you so much.” He gently kissed her lips and smiled slightly. She tried to move but Brian stopped her. “Stay still. I’ll be right back with the doctor.” He went out, found the same doctor, and told him that she was awake.
Her eyes were closed again when Brian returned with the doctor. “Rebecca, can you open your eyes for me?” the doctor asked. After a couple of moments her eyes fluttered open. “How are you feeling? Are you in any pain?” She nodded her head slightly letting him know that she was in some pain. He wrote something down on her chart. “Ok, you just take it easy and I’ll send a nurse in with some medicine. It’ll make you sleepy so you’ll be out again within a few minutes.”
“Wait, she just woke up and you’re going to put her back to sleep?” Brian asked.
“She needs to sleep as much as possible and it’s the best way to keep her comfortable. I know you’re probably worried, but she’ll wake up again. The nurse will be in, in a moment.”
A female nurse came in, took Rebecca’s blood pressure, temperature, and put some medicine into her IV. It wasn’t a minute after the injection before her eyes closed again and he saw her body relax. He kissed her on the lips then went out to call everyone.
