“Tomorrow’s Promise”

Chapter 12
Gina, Lauren, Hannah, and Nick all came to the hospital the next morning. The doctor was in with Rebecca when they got there so they waited in the hall with Brian. He told him that she slept all night and she had just woken up a few minutes before they got there.
“So why must we wait out here? I wanna see my girl,” Gina questioned Brian.
“Doc's orders. Once he's done we can go in.” Brian peered into the small window on the door. He could see Rebecca's lower body outline in the sheets of the covers.
Lauren saw tears about to overcome Brian's eyes and gave him a hug, “She's okay now Brian. She's awake, now stop thinking about the bad things.”
“I know, but that still doesn’t erase what I did to her… what if she doesn’t forgive me?”
“Brian…” Nick started but he stopped when the doctor came out.
“How is she?” Brian asked.
“She’s still in a little bit of pain, and disoriented. Other than that she seems to be ok. You can go in now.”
Gina was the first one through the door and she went straight to Rebecca’s side. “Welcome back. How are you feeling?” she asked.
“I hurt some, but ok,” Rebecca said with a quiet hoarse voice.
“We missed you,” Lauren said.
“Yeah we all did, and we’re glad you finally decided to come back to us,” Hannah added.
“I think you broke my record for the longest sleep, that’s not fair man,” Nick said with a boyish grin.
Brian stood off in the corner watching the four of them talk. He was scared in a way because he didn’t know what her reaction would be. The last thing he wanted was for something else bad to happen. Hannah noticed him and went over to talk to him. “Don’t you want to talk to her?”
“Yeah, but it can wait. You guys go ahead,” he said. “I’m gonna go get something to drink. You want anything?” She said no thanks and he picked up his hat then left the room. The only other person that notice him leave was Nick, and he followed him out.
“Yo, Bri where ya going?” Nick asked.
“For a walk, I need some air.”
“What’s wrong? You should be happier than this now that she’s awake.”
“I am happy about that, but at the same time I’m scared to death.”
“Of what?” Nick asked as they made their way out of the back exit of the hospital. At the same time they both put on sunglasses and Brian put on the hat he had been carrying.
“There is still a chance that I could lose her, Nick, I’m not out of the woods yet.”
“You don’t know that she’s gonna leave you. She may not even remember what happened or that might not even matter to her now.”
“But what if it does matter? That’s the thing, I can’t keep doing this over and over… if she doesn’t forgive me, or if she still needs time, then it’s over. I can’t fight anymore, my heart can’t take anymore.”
Nick put his arm around Brian’s shoulders. “I’m sorry man. I wish there was something I could do. I’ll be here for you no matter what happens.”
“Thanks man, that means a lot to me.”
The girls stayed and chatted for a little while longer until a nurse came in and gave Rebecca some more medicine. She wasn’t saying much anyway, but they didn’t mind. It was just good to know what she was awake and getting better. Brian and Nick came back to the room a few minutes after the nurse left. Nick told them that Brian wasn’t feeling well so they went out for some fresh air. Gina said that they should probably go so that Rebecca could rest, and after everyone said their good-byes, Brian and Rebecca were left alone.
Rebecca watched as Brian stood near the door staring at the floor. He glanced up at her and saw that she was watching him so he gave her a half smile and waved. She motioned for him to come and sit. Brian slowly made his way to the bed and sat down next to Rebecca. “Hey, how you feeling?”
“I’m getting groggy from the medicine, but ok I guess.”
“That’s great. I’m glad to hear it.”
“Brian, what happened? No one will really tell me anything except that I was in a car accident.”
“Well… you got hit from three sides, and you hit your head pretty hard on the window. You were in a coma for almost seven days.”
“I don’t remember any of that. Is my car ok?”
He had to laugh a little. “I’m afraid not, but don’t worry, you’ll get a new car. This accident wasn’t your fault. What’s the last thing you remember?”
“Um… being with Gina, Lauren, and Hannah, but I don’t know what we were doing.”
He tucked some lose hair around her ear and smiled a sad smile, ”We went out to a club and then when we got home, we got into a fight. You were going to Gina's when the crash happened.”
“What did we fight about? Was it really that bad?”
“We just had a disagreement. I don't remember what it was,” Brian tried to hard to keep the truth from her. He was scared she would leave him, “I guess it was bad if you took off your ring.” Brian held up the small ring.
Rebecca sat for a moment thinking, trying to remember. Her eyes got wide and she gasped. “I remember taking the ring off… it was right before I got hit.”
Only joking he said, “Maybe if you kept it on, this wouldn't have happened. Oh God! I didn't mean it to sound that bad. Uh... need to fluff your pillow?”
“It’s ok Brian… I know you didn’t mean it like that. And yes my pillow could use a fluffing. Hospital pillows suck.”
“Ok!” He got up and fluffed her pillow. Smiling he asked, “Better?”
“Yeah, thanks… Brian none of this makes any sense to me…”
“What sweetie?”
“Everything... I don't understand anything that happened before the accident, maybe it's just because I don't remember, but I would never take your ring off... I just wouldn't.”
“Uh... maybe it itched and you took it off for a second. Or the fight really got to you.”
“I just don’t know. I’m getting a headache.”
“Then you should go to sleep. Need or want anything?”
“Um, no thanks though.”
“Ok, then sleep.”
“You’ll be here when I wake up, right?” she asked holding onto one of his hands.
“Of course. I never left your side the whole time you’ve been here… well, except for once but that wasn’t my choice. I’m not going anywhere.”
“Thank you… I love you Bri.”
“I love you too,” he said and kissed to top of her head. He felt bad for not telling her the whole truth, but to him that was the best for the both of them.
