“Tomorrow’s Promise”

Chapter 5

The next morning Brian woke up with a monster headache. He could barely move it hurt so bad. He thought for sure that if he moved his head would pound right off. Rebecca heard him groan from the kitchen. She almost felt bad for him so she fixed him a glass of the drink Gina told her about, which was two raw eggs and tomato juice mixed together. She looked in the cabinet under the sink and found Gina’s bottle of Everclear that she was hiding from Kevin. She fixed him a shot, put a bottle of extra strength Tylenol in her pocket, and grabbed the two drinks. Brian opened his eyes when he heard her come in the room and he watched her go into the bathroom. She came back out and walked over to the bed.
“Come on,” she said holding her hand out.
“I can’t get up,” he whined.
“Get up, or suffer. I’ll help you.” She helped him sit up and kept him from falling back down when the room started to spin. It took some work, but they finally made it to the bathroom. “Ok, if you can keep this down then you’ll be fine. Are you feeling nauseous?”
“Yeah, a little. Why? What do I have to drink?”
“Maybe you should puke before you drink this stuff, it’s not gonna work if you do it after.”
“I think you’re gonna get your wish,” he said, turning a little green.
“Oh gross, call for me when you finish,” Rebecca said going back to the bedroom shutting the bathroom door behind her. About ten minutes later she heard the toilet flush and his voice calling her back. She went in and turned the ventilation fan on. He was sitting on the floor leaning against the wall, his face flushed and damp with sweat. She could have cried when she saw how miserable he looked. After washing his face off with a wet cloth she handed him the drink.
“What’s in this?” he asked.
“Just drink it, then take the shot. I’ll go get you a glass of water for afterwards if you need it.” She heard him gagging when she left.
“Oh God, that was disgusting. Are you trying to kill me?” he called to her.
“Take the shot!”
“No way.”
“Take it, you can’t get any worse,” she said coming back with a glass of water in her hand. He took it, then grabbed the water out of her hand. “You don’t have to snatch.”
“That was terrible.”
“Well that’s what you drank last night. Take some Tylenol and go back to bed. If you puke again, I’m not cleaning it up.” With that, she left him alone again.
Rebecca didn’t hear anything from Brian for a little over an hour and a half. He slowly walked in wearing a clean set of clothes, which was a pair of black Nike snap pants and a white wife beater. His eyes were still bloodshot and his face was still a little flushed. He sat down on the couch and ran a hand through his hair.
“Feel any better?” Rebecca asked not looking at him.
“Yeah, a little. That stuff worked.”
“Too bad,” she muttered under her breath.
“What was that?”
“Nothing, nevermind.”
“What is your problem?”
She laughed a slight sarcastic laugh. “What's my problem? You're asking what MY problem is? Come on Brian, you may be sick, but I know you're not stupid.”
“What are you so fucking uptight about?”
“How do you expect me to be after what happened last night?”
“Oh... I forgot about that. Baby, I'm so sorry. She meant nothing to me. You are my world,” he said trying to hold one of her hands but she pulled it away.
“Yeah, I'm your world... tell me why Brian. Why did you do it?”
“She kept giving me drinks so I got wasted and then she got her ass in my face. Why were you at the club anyway?”
“We came to surprise you guys, but I guess I was the one who got the surprise. I thought I could trust you...”
“You can trust me. I had no control over my actions last night. I love you.”
“You didn't have to drink. You didn't have to keep drinking.”
“I... I don't know why I kept drinking. My head just said another one, another one.”
“You said I can trust you, right? Well if I hadn't been there, could I have trusted you to tell me?”
“Yes, I would have told you. I would never keep anything like that from you. But you have to realize that when you're drunk, you really have no control on what you are doing. I thought that the chick was you at one point in time. Her ass was just in my face so I couldn't refuse,” Brian said and he knew that he had just put his foot in his mouth.
“Oh I get it! If there's some big breasted, fat ass bitch all over you, you can't say no because you want to get your little dick wet. Real smooth move Brian! Why don't I just get some boobs and an ass, and you can fuck me any which way you want like you would have done if I haven't caught you. Tell me Brian, is the first time you've ever done this?” Rebecca was fighting back the tears with her anger.
“I would have never fucked that girl!”
“Yeah, you say that now! How am I supposed to believe you? When you're drunk you have no control remember?”
“You have no control! And the guys have always watched me and made sure I didn't fuck up!”
“Well they weren’t there for you this time were they? And fuck Brian, you can control your actions! Remember I do have one friend in particular that is almost drunk 24/7 and she seems more sober when she's drunk. Just get away from me,” she said as the tears slowly started to fall.
“I’m not leaving,” he said in his normal tone of voice, trying to calm down.
“Then I am.”
“Where in the hell do you think you’re going?”
“It doesn't matter where I'm going because you won't be there!”
“Please don’t leave me…”
“I have to get away from here…”
“Don't leave me. You walk out that door, don't even come back to me.” His voice cracked and yet again he said something he wished he could take back. Rebecca stood with her back to him as she started to cry harder. She sniffed, grabbed her keys, and walked towards the door. “Baby, wait, I didn’t mean it. I’m sorry… please don’t go.”
“I need time to think,” she said opening the front door and running out. Brian stood in the doorway and watched her drive away. She stopped at the end of the street and called Gina, letting her know what she was coming over.
Rebecca tried to stop crying as much as possible so that she could actually see to drive, but it was difficult because of all of the emotions she had raging inside. She knew that this was it, this was the end. It was causing too much pain trying to stay with Brian. She couldn’t take that pain any more. After talking to Gina about it when she got to her house, she was going to end things with Brian. She would be doing them both a favor. She glanced at the ring that was shining on her finger; Brian’s promise to always love her. Keeping her eyes on the road and her hands partly on the steering wheel, she removed the ring from her finger. She glanced over the engraving for a second then dropped it into the cup holder. The next few seconds were filled with confusion, chaos, and fear. First came the sound of screeching tired and brakes, then the sound of crunching metal and shattering glass filled the air.
