“Tomorrow’s Promise”

Chapter 7

Brian was beyond scared and shaken up when he entered the hospital. The police officer told the nurse who he was there to see, and she gave him the room number. After that he was left alone. He went to her room and hesitated a couple of minutes before going inside. As soon as he opened the door and saw Rebecca lying in the bed, the tears poured from his eyes. She had a huge bruise/burn on her face from the air bag, four or five tubes were coming out of her, and there was a cast on her left arm. He hadn’t found the strength to make it to the bed, when a doctor entered the room.
“Hi, I’m Dr. Lucas. I’ve been with Rebecca since she arrived in the emergency room.”
Brian wiped his face and shook the doctor’s hand. “I’m Brian. What’s wrong with her? Is she going to be ok?”
“The outcome is hard to predict at the moment. She’s in a coma, she hasn’t been conscious since she’s been here. We did a CAT scan and found a little bit of swelling in the brain, which was caused by the impact of her head hitting her side window. We ran some tests and there wasn’t any internal bleeding found. She has a few fractured bones in her hand, a lot of scrapes and bruises, but overall she was pretty lucky if you consider the extent of the accident. If you have any questions feel free to ask.”
Brian could barely speak. Everything that the doctor had just said was swimming around in his head, and the only thing that made any sense to him at the time was that this whole thing was his fault. He was never going to be able to forgive himself for this. “Is she going to wake up?” he finally choked out.
“That’s hard to say. Comas are weird things, and it’s difficult to predict when and if the patient wakes up. We will be monitoring her around the clock for the next 48 hours. Oh, and before I go, talk to her. Talking to patients in a coma can always help. Give her something to come back to,” and with that he left the room.
Brian went out in the hall to use his cell phone. The first person he called was Gina since he hung up on her earlier. He had to redial the number three times, but he finally got it. It rang twice before she answered. “Howdy dudey! If this is Brian, what the fuck is going on? If not, I am sorry."
“…Gina…” that’s all he could get out before he started bawling again.
“Brian? Oh my God! What’s wrong? Talk to me.”
“She was… accident… at the hospital…”
“Calm down. Are you at the hospital right now?”
“Yes.”
“Ok, we’ll be right there.” Gina hung up the phone, grabbed Kevin, and drug him out to the car explaining everything on the way.
Brian went back into her room, not able to call anyone else at the moment. He pulled a chair up to the side of her bed and just looked at her. Fresh tears fell from his eyes as he held and kissed her good hand. “I’m so sorry, baby. This is all my fault, and I’m so sorry. You wouldn’t me here right now if it wasn’t for me.”
Brian then noticed that her ring wasn’t on her finger. He looked around the room for her stuff, but he didn’t see anything. He got up and went out to the nurse’s station to see if they had anything. The nurse handed him two bags, one was stuff from the car that the cops left, and the other was everything that she had on her when she was brought in. He thanked her and went back to the room. He sat back down in the chair and went through the bag of stuff that was on her, but the ring wasn’t in there. He looked in the other bag and found it in there, and he immediately knew why. She had taken the ring off. He wasn’t sure how he knew, but he did, there was no other explanation for it.
About ten minutes later Gina came running into the room with Kevin closely behind. Brian had been sitting with his head in his hands and he jumped up when he heard Gina gasp. She put her hand up to her mouth then turned to Kevin and started crying into his chest.
“How are you holding up?” Kevin asked Brian.
“I’m not doing so good man.”
Gina pulled away from Kevin and hugged Brian. “What happened to her Brian?” Gina cried. Brian explained the whole thing to the best of his abilities and it just made Gina cry harder.
“Bri, did you call Nick?”
“No y’all are the only one’s I called.”
“Ok, I’ll go call everyone,” Kevin said going out of the room.
