“Tomorrow’s Promise”

Chapter 9
The next day Howie went to the hospital with some lunch from McDonalds for Brian. He knocked softly on the door before entering the room. Brian was asleep in the chair holding Rebecca’s hand with his head resting on the side of the bed. Howie didn’t want to wake him, but he promised Kevin that he would talk to Brian.
“Hey Bri, wake up,” he said gently touching his shoulder. Brian groaned a little and lifted his head. “Sorry to wake you, but I came baring food!”
“Hey thanks man, but I’m not hungry.”
“Too bad you’re eating anyway. Kevin said to see that you eat, even if that means shoving the food down your throat. How is everything going?”
“It’s the same. The doctor said that if she doesn’t wake up soon, she never will. I’m so scared, D. What if she doesn’t wake up?”
“Don’t think like that. She’s strong, she’ll pull through.”
“I hope you’re right.”
“Well, I came baring food, but also some news. You’re not going to want to hear this, but I have to tell you… We have a make-up concert tomorrow night and…”
“I’m not going. No way.”
“You have to Brian.”
“No I’m not leaving her for that long. I have to be here for her.”
“You know you have to go. Kevin already worked it out to where the set list has been cut short to only an hour. We have to do this show and we all have to be there.”
Brian didn’t say anything. He just sat and played with Rebecca’s hair. Howie took the hint and left. About an hour later Gina, Lauren, and Hannah came to the hospital to sit with Rebecca while Brian went to rehearsal. He was pissed off at the world, but he left anyway.
Brian didn’t do much at the rehearsal. He barely sang and only danced a few times. The other guys let it slide, but Kevin gave him a speech about being more focused at the show. As soon as the rehearsal was over Brian left for the hospital as quickly as he could.
“Hey! You’re back! How was rehearsal?” Gina asked.
“Uh, it sucked. I couldn’t concentrate on anything that I was doing. Any change?”
“No, everything is the same except the fact that you’re all sweaty and you’re starting to stink.”
“Gee thanks, Gina.”
“Go take a shower, we’ll stay with her,” Lauren suggested.
“I don’t know…”
“It’s not like you have to shave your legs or anything so it’ll take what… about ten minutes at the most,” Hannah said. “Go. You’ll feel better afterwards.”
“Ok fine. I’ll be right back.” He grabbed some clothes from his bag and left the room.
“I’m gonna time him,” Gina said checking her watch for the time.
“Why?” Lauren asked with a laugh.
“I’m bored, leave me alone.” The girls chatted some while waiting for Brian to return. When he came back he looked a lot better, and they could tell that he at least felt better physically. “Eight minutes and thirty two seconds. Wow, I wish I could take a shower in under ten minutes,” Gina said.
“Huh?” Brian asked.
“She was timing you the whole time you were gone,” Hannah told him.
“Oh… ok, whatever.”
“See now you smell good, and you look better, and whether you’ll admit it or not I know you feel a little better. Shower are great,” Gina said and everyone just looked at her. “What?”
“I think you’re losing it,” Brian said taking his seat next to Rebecca’s bed.
“You’re wrong my dear friend, I lost it a long time ago,” she said leaning down to give him a hug. “We’ll be back tomorrow while you’re at the show.”
“Bye ladies, and thank you.”
“It was no problem,” Lauren said then they left.
