My Socks

After kniting many pairs of socks with different cuffs, heels, toes, etc., I have designed my own pattern for socks that fit my feet best, stay up, and wear well. They are not in multiple sizes and don't have any variations. They fit a woman's size 8-10 foot pretty well. I don't wear socks with shorts or skirts, and don't wear pants short enough to show off socks, so I save my lace knitting for something that people can actually see to oooh and aaahhh over. The various techniques shown are gathered from years of sock knitting, from many different pattern and tip sources. I picked and chose the bits and pieces of other patterns that I liked. I also knit both socks at once (A cuff, B cuff, A heel, B heel) so that I can more easily remember any variations I use and the two socks not only match, but actually get done!

You are welcome to copy and share this pattern with whomever you choose, as many copies as you choose, as long as YOU don't publish it as your own.

Yarn: 80/20 wool/nylon sock yarn
Gauge: 7 sts/inch
Needles: size 1 double pointed.[Note: I knit very loosely - most people could use a size 3 needle to get this gauge]

Hold 2 needles together (or use a single needle 2 sizes bigger than you will use to knit with and cast on 56 stitches. Divide stitches over 3 needles (20/20/16)[this makes it easier as you always knit the first stitch on the needle]. Join, using both strands to knit the first stitch. Drop the yarn tail and knit the cuff in K2,P2 rib for 6 inches.

Divide for heel - Move stitches around so that there are 30 stitches on the top, starting and ending with P2. Work heel pattern on remaining 26 stitches.

Row 1 - *Slip 1 as if to knit, k1. Repeat from * across row.
Row 2 - Slip 1, then P across

Repeat rows 1 and 2 until heel measures 2 inches.

Turn heel: Row 1 - Slip 1, k18, SSK, turn
Row 2 - P11, P2tog, turn
Row 3 - K11, SSK, turn
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until all stitches are picked up, ending with row 2 (12 remain)

Instep: Knit across heel stitches, pick up stitches evenly along right side of heel (it never turns out to be the same number each time, so why specify). Make sure you twist the stitch where the side joins the top stitches. Continue K2 P2 pattern across top stitches. Twist that first stitch again and pick up the same number of stitches on the left side of the heel that you did on the right (if you have to fudge it to make it look even and prevent holes, then make corrections (extra k2tog) in the next row). Knit 6 stitches from heel.

Divide stitches so that Needle 1 contains the 6 left stitches from the heel and the side stitches, Needle 2 contains the top of the sock, and needle 3 has the left side and remaining 6 heel stitches.

Gussetts: Round 1 - Knit until 3 stitches before end of needle 1, K2 tog, k1, then continue in P2, K2 pattern across Needle 2 (the gussett decreases will blend into the K2 P2 ribbing). On needle 3, K1, SSK, K to end.
Round 2 - K across needle 1, P2 K2 across needle 2, K across needle 3.

Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until there are 56 stitches total (13, 30, 13). Continue knitting as in round 2 for gussett until sock measures 7.25" from heel.

[Note: my foot is 9.25 inches long and I allow 2 inches for the toe. Eventhough the toe doesn't come out 2 inches long, I like my socks snug and this works for me. If you like a looser sock, make the foot longer]

Toe: Knit 1 round plain. Divide stitches so that there are 14 stitches on needle 1, 28 stitches on needle 2, and 14 stitches on needle 3.

[I prefer a sort of rounded toe and have found it more comfortable than the flatter toe you may have made before]

Round 1 : needle 1 - Knit to last 3 sts, SSK, K1; needle 2 - K1, K2TOG, K to last 3 sts, SSK, K1; needle 3 - K1, K2TOG, K to end.
Round 2 : Knit

Repeat toe rounds 1 and 2 until 16 stitches remain. K across stitches from needle 1 and combine them with those from needle 3. Each of 2 needles will have 8 stitches.

Graft Toe: Look it up, lazy bones! [Actually, I will add this soon.]

Please contact me if you find an error or typo. I appreciate it. If you need help, email. I will do all that I can to help.

Happy Knitting!

Sheryl
