Joseph Batease

                                           Joseph Battist (Battease) 1808/1818-1897

One day I hope to find a picture of Joseph. I was told once
that a branch of the family in New Hampshire have a picture,
so perhaps one will surface. Joseph wandered. His nomadic
life made it hard to track him in vital records but we finally
did it. On his marriage certificate to Laura, his name was
spelled like his father's - "Battist" - and on his marriage
record to Susan, his name was spelled - "Battese." Other
spellings include: Battice, Battis, Bettis, Batise, Bottis,
Battease and Batease (as our family spells it today).

The two Charles were half-brothers.
Joseph, by two wives we know of, had a total of 18 children. Comment: possible other marriages of Joseph: 1. Mrs. Philena Sessions - 15 Oct 1838 Burlington, Vermont 2. Eliza Sophia Glynn - 01 Mar 1842 Londonderry, Vermont If so, that would make Laura his 3rd wife and Susan his 4th wife. I have no proof that the Joseph Battease who married these women is the same Joseph Battese who married Laura Wescott and Susan Rodgers. It is only speculation at this time. Time line: (spellings from the records, including census, vital, and pension) 1818 Birth of Jonathan Millard in Vermont. 1818 Birth of Joseph Battist in St. John, Québec, Canada. 1823 Birth of Laura Jane Wescott in Pittsford, Vermont. 1827 Birth of John Battese, possible half-brother to Joseph. 1829 Birth of Charles St. John Bettis, half-brother to Joseph. 1832 Birth of Betsey E. (Batease) Westcott, half-sister to Joseph. 1842 Birth of Susan Rodgers in Whiting, Vermont. 1844 Marriage of Joseph Battist and Laura Westcot (spellings on marriage record) in Hubbardton, Vermont. 1850 Joseph Battese and his wife Laura living in Tinmouth, Vermont. 1850 Jonathan Millard and his wife Margaret living in Wells, Vermont. 1850 John Battese living with Horton Family Hubbardton, Vermont. 1850 Betsey Batease living with Joseph and Laura, age 15. 1850 Betsey Batease married Nathan Westcott, 27 Sep Tinmouth, Vermont. 1855 Charles St. John Bettis married his 1st wife 26 Jun Burlington, Vt. 1860 Joseph Battease and his wife Laura living in Tinmouth, Vermont. 1869 Laura Batease applies for pension from the death of her son George W. Batease in the Civil War. She claimed to be the widow of Joseph Batease. 1870 Joseph Batise living with the Warren family in Orwell, Vermont. 1870 Laura Batease and her father Job Westcott living in Middletown Springs, Vermont. 1870 Jonathan Millard and his daughter Mahala living in Wells, Vermont. 1872 Joseph Battese married Susan Rodgers in Orwell, Vermont. 1880 Joseph Batteese and his wife Susan living in Orwell, Vermont. 1880 Laura J. and her husband Jonathan Millard living in Wells, Vermont. (I suspect this was a common law marriage.) 1882 Laura Jane Batease applies again for pension from the death of her son George W. Batease in the Civil War. She claims her husband Joseph Batease "has not been heard of for the last 15 years." 1884 Death of Laura Batease. She was buried in Jonathan Millard's lot in Wells, Vermont (next to his first wife Margaret) under the name of Laura Battease and not Laura Millard. 1896 Death of Susan Battese, of heart failure, in Orwell, Vermont. 1897 Death of Joseph Batease in Weston, Vermont. Burial unknown. 1897 Joseph Batease, due to death, was dropped as a pensioner of son George W. Batease. 1900 Jonathan Millard, aged 82, widowed, living with his daughter Mahala (and her husband Charles P. Marnes and their children) in Nickerson City, Reno Co., Kansas. 1910 Johnathan Millard, aged 91, still living in the same place. Notation: A word about the birth date of Joseph Battist. The records and and census records all give him a different age. I truely don't believe the man kept track of his age as was common in those days by many or he just may have been just plain sneaky so his wives didn't know how old he really was.

To date I have not found any native background for this man. However, this site is continually being updated with anything new I discover, so check back from time to time.
