Index
Individual Note: When Zeda was about 5 years old, her father died of bloodpoisoning, due to a wound he got while plowing bare foot inthe fields. After her father's death, the two older girlswere sent to live with their mother's brothers family. Zedaand Harry went with their mother's sister and her family.Zeda's mother was so devastated by the death of her husbandthat she was to become mentally unstable. She was committedto a mental institution when Zeda was about 7 years andHarry was about 5. A local minister came to their Aunt ZoeKirkland and suggested that she put the Nelson children inan orphanage since she had eight children of her own. Itseemed the logical thing to do. Harry and Zeda were sent toBuckner Orphans Home, a Baptist institution in Dallas,Texas. They were to remain there until they were grown.
