Chapter 9

"Listen, I don't know what the hell I'm doing here, mom. I mean, I don't belong. I used to belong before. He was my best friend." Serenity talked barely above whisper on the public pay phone. There was a line consisitng of 3 people behind her. They were impatiently tapping their feet on the floor. They looked annoyed to say the least. This didn't bother Serenity. She was in enough of a state without strangers adding to this confusion. None of the boys allowed her to use their cell phone, claiming they had to use it to inform Destiny/Nick's families about what was happening. She knew that in a way they blamed her for this happening. Or maybe she was just getting paranoid. All she knew was that she had enough determination to ignore these minor obstacles. She wanted him. She wanted Alexander James McLean. She knew she deserved him more than Destiny ever did. They were soulmates. They did everything together and they had everything in common. Nevermind the saying "Oppisites Attract." This isn't always true. It wasn't going to be true this case. She just didn't know how to approach the situation.

"Maybe I should leave..." Serenity quietened down listening to her mother's reassuring words.
"Listen honey, you have to stay. They need your support." Her mother told her.
"I don't want to be pushy."
"It's not being pushy. He is your best friend."
"Yeah, that's all he is." Serenity turned to face the people, twiriling the telephone cord with her fingers. She was shocked to see their reddening faces. She turned back to face the safe wall.

"I know you wish he could be more, Serenity. I heard you cry yourself to sleep at night over him. I know you missed him."
"Mom, you really don't have to remind me. I was there." Serenity sighed.
"Anyway..." She started trying to leave that subject behind.
"How's everything?" Serenity continued with small talk for a while.

"So Nick...what happened to you?" Carrie asked.
"What?" Nick asked with confusion on his face.
"Umm..." she couldn't help laughing. "Unless you're practicing some mummy ritual, something happened to your head."
"Oh...yeah."
"Yeah to what?"
"The second thing you said."
"Okay. What happened?"
"Had something dropped on my head."
"Ouch." She cringed at the thought.
"Yeah. I'm okay though, it was just a concussion. My head's real strong, just like stone." He said trying to sound mucho. Shortly after, the crimson color occupied his face. "Okay...that was dumb." He said shyly.
She bit her lip, trying her hardest not to laugh. "No, it was...cute."
Before he could open his mouth to say anything she kneeled down to grab her bag and pointed to the pay phone down the hall.
"I really have to make this call. Maybe I'll see you around Stone Head. It was nice meeting you." As soon as her back was turned, she allowed a few giggles to burst out. Fastly, but surely she walked down the hall.

"You are such an idiot, Carter." Nick said as he walked back to the waiting room.

Carrie frowned at the long line of people and stood behind an old man. Five minutes passed. The crowd of people, obviously annoyed decided to go find another phone. They seperated and started walking their seperate ways. Realizing that it was almost her turn, Carrie searched her back pocket for some small change. She couldn't help overhearing the conversation of the girl standing infront of her. "Mom, I really don't want to start talking about Alex again."
"If you want him so much fight for him." Carrie was surprised she could hear the person on the other side of the conversation. She must have been screaming.
"What? I already tried that. I'm sick of being so mean to Destiny."
"If that's the only way you can get your man..."
She smirked at the mention of AJ being referred to as 'her man'.
"You're right. Listen mom I gotta go. There's a long line of people behind me. Bye!" She hung up and turned around.

"Where'd everyone go? Ugh, just rushing me for no reason. Stupid idiots always in a hurry." She said angrily, not realizing that she had been on the phone for over 20 minutes. Serenity decided to walk back to the waiting room she'd been avoiding all day. As she started walking, she bumped into Carrie who stopped her from getting away by grabbing her hand. Serenity turned to face her adversary. Her eyes, which showed some emotion earlier in the day, turned back to stone.
"Do you mind?" Serenity snapped.
"I'm waiting."
"For?"
"An apology."
"You're kidding me, right?" She smiled wickedly.
"No, i'm pretty serious." Carrie didn't look amused.
"Well, you can wait until hell freezes over. Oh no, wait, that might actually happen. You can wait until you look at yourself in the mirror and don't get frightened by the reflection." Serenity rolled her eyes and stormed away.
"What the hell is her problem?" Carrie questioned to herself as she started dialing the number.

"Where'd you go Nick?" Kevin questioned as he saw Nick walking towards them with an candy bar wrap.
"Okay, nevermind, I get it." Kevin laughed and sat back down.
"So anything new?" Nick asked.
"Not really." Brian said glancing up from the absorbing magazine.
"Uhh...rok, a bridal magazine?" Nick questioned looking at the cover.
"Do you have a problem, Nicky?"
"No, it's just that I can barely imagine you wearing a wedding dress. I'm sure you'd look beautiful though." Nick started cracking up.
"Shut up Carter. I'm not really reading it." Brian frowned.
"I just don't like hospitals, you know that." Brian answered.
"I forgot. Sorry." Nick said as he calmed down.
"Quiet down children." Kevin said loudly towering above them.
"Whoa, Kevin I was sleeping." Howie mumbled waking up from his sleep.
They continued their conversation for a few minutes until AJ finally spoke.
"Okay, be quiet y'all. I think I see the doctor coming." AJ said and rose to his feet.

Indeed the doctor was coming towards them. Dr. Peterson had a pile of papers stacked up in her hands. She was trying her hardest not to drop them. AJ signaled for her, waving his hands up in the air. She nodded and made a hand movement, saying that she would be there in a minute. She turned to talk to a woman who was passing her. Misreading this movement, Nick started walking towards her. When he reached her he tapped her on the shoulder. Dr. Peterson turned around in shock and dropped all the papers on the floor.

"Holy hell!" Nick said bending down to grab the papers and bumped his head with the woman the doctor was talking to, who also bent down to help collect the scattered papers.

"OW!" They both said.

"Nick?"
"Carrie?"
"If you like me, just ask me on a date. No need for these sudden, painful meetings." She teased.
"I'm sorry, is your head okay?" She asked when she rememberd he had a concussion.
"Yeah, I'll live."
"Yes Mr. Carter, you will. I don't think you hit eachother that hard." Dr. Peterson said looked down at both of them.
"I am really sorry Dr. Peterson." Nick said still collecting the documents.
"Don't worry about it. When you're done piling them up just put them on the desk over there. They'll know what to do with them." She said pointing at the reception desk.
"In the mean time, I am going to talk to your friends over there."
Nick and Carrie nodded as they worked as a team to clean up the mess Nick made.

"Dr. Peterson! How is she?" Kevin asked as the doctor approached them.
"I have some good news for all of you. I'm really not supposed to share this with you since you're not really her family but since I got the approval of her parents by phone I think it's okay. She's awake. She's doing pretty well. We still don't really know what caused this but she seems to be recovering beautifully." Dr Peterson concluded with a smile.
"That's great! can we go see her?" AJ said with an excitment in his voice.
"Yes, you can. She's in room #450. I think she'll be more than happy to see her friends." Dr. Peterson said as she left the glowing men to their business.

"Do you guys mind if i go alone first?" AJ asked, the others shook their head and told him to go.

As he approached the room his heart started pounding. He opened the door and saw Destiny looking in disbelief at the hospital food. She just took the spoon and started hitting it on the tray, as if she was playing the drums. When she was done AJ started clapping.
"Maybe we should get you to play the drums for us."
"Maybe so but then who the hell would agree to be your lazy butts' choreographer. No sane person would agree to such an awful task." Destiny teased.
"We all know you're not sane Des, you don't have to keep reminding us." AJ played along.
"Damn right. Hey."
"Hi."
"I missed you." She said
"You too." He bent down to kiss her but she stopped him.
"We gotta talk..." She started.
