G-Men Softball

Well, we didn't come in last for the first time in G-Men Softball history and we are planning to take that momentum into our upcoming Fall 2002 Season.  All our players are back with the exception of Mickey Neal due to ACL Reconstruction surgery.  So the gimp is no longer a player/manager which will allow him to devote more time to his game strategy skills.  Once again we signed up to be in the lowest league possible which was Mickey's first great strategic move to give us a shot at the title....or at least go above .500 for once.  Hopefully we'll get pictures in soon if we can find someone interested enough to take shots of our team.

Pre-Season Highlights:

Sept. 17, 4:00 p.m. (approx. 4 hours before our 1st game)

Rico: "Hey Mickey, we haven't practiced yet, huh?"

Mickey: "No.   Maybe I should've told people to go to the batting cages earlier this week."

Rico: "oh, yeah, maybe you should've"

Game Summaries

Game 1: G-Men 19   Cottage Colts 12- I believe this is the first time the G-Men have started off the season on a winning note.  We actually are in first place.  Our bats came alive in this game but our fielding has some kinks to work out.  It probably helped that the team we played wasn't very good, but hey, we'll take it.

Injury Report: Out: Mickey (ACL) , Jeff Hall (new wife won't let him play because he's on his honeymoon or something lame like that)

Game 2: G-Men 9   Tribe 9- We're two games into the season and we still haven't lost, which is definitely an improvement from past seasons.   We had a chance in the bottom of the 7th to win the game but couldn't quite put it away.

Game 3: G-Men 13   Make it a Double 25- Ok, back to what we're used to.  We couldn't hit and fielding wasn't that much better.  The other team was good though.

Game 4: G-Men 20   Un-Insurables 12- Apparently someone doesn't think this site is informative or funny enough this season.  I won't name any names or anything, but here's a hint: His name starts with "J" and ends with "eff".  Anywho, this was a great game for us and Mickey deserves Manager of the Year for juggling the lineup on short notice.  We started out down by 8 runs, and at the bottom of the 5th down by 1 run, we came up with a 10 run inning to finish them off.  Thanks to Tod Chapman for helping us out and coming to the game and contributing with some big hits and solid infield play.  Also, our 2-headed monster at 3rd base (Alan and Dave) came up with some big defensive plays.   We even came up with a double play.  Of course it was made against two players who probably had a combined age of 120 years old, but hey, that doesn't show up in the final stats.

Injury Report: Out: Mickey (ACL) , Jeff Hall (He had to cook dinner. For his wife? Nope, it was for another man.) Salespeople (Eating food together. Isn't that cute?)

Game 5: G-Men 12   Magnolia Barber Shop 13-   Well, the game started out fine. (see Greenland's Late o Meter at bottom of this page).  We got out to a quick lead and played defense well enough to hold them to 4 runs by the 6th inning.  Ryan Wenger hit a home run to lead our offensive production and we were sitting pretty at 10-4.   Then the snowball effect began with two outs.  One error led to another and we were down 2 runs heading into the top of the 7th.   We stayed alive by scoring 2 runs to take it to the bottom of the 7th.  Unfortunately the bottom of the 7th took all of 2 minutes before they scored the winning run.  The hard part of our schedule is coming up so we need to work on being lucky or good.

Injury Report: Out: Dan Mender (Is he still on this team?), Dave Bauerlein (Cheating on us with another team)

Game 6: G-Men 11   Team De Veer 13-   It's been a long time since I've updated this page and for my faithful reader (that's not a typo) thank you for checking in.  We played undefeated Team De @%#$*$!   First off, they whined and complained about anything and everything.  They also slid into second with cleats up to break up double plays.  A bunch of classless players who are trying to relive their glory days of riding the pine on their high school team.   I really wish we would have won, but we came up short in the bottom of the last inning.  We got behind early and then had a couple late inning rallies.   At some point we need to work on getting a lead and keeping it instead of trying to come from behind.   Peter did an excellent job of pitching in relief of Greenland.

Injury Report: Out: John Greenland (Not late, he didn't even bother showing! Some lame excuse about being in Japan on business....)

Game 7: G-Men 15   Old Milwaukee17-   Mickey has consistently had to juggle our lineup.   This time our two pitchers weren't able to play so we tried the John Carbone/Dave Bauerlein combination.  Our troops once again got behind early but then our defense stepped up and our bats were hot.   Our late inning rally wasn't enough though and our quest for hitting the .500 mark fell short.  We might be turning the corner though.  We've played the top teams in the league and have only lost by a couple of runs.  By next season those will be games that we'll win.  I hope.

Injury Report: Out: Dan Mender (seriously, is he still on this team?), John Greenland (Japan....again), Peter Carty (didn't care to tell us why=drug deal or hitting babies)

Game 8: G-Men vs. Pacific Climate Control 1-   This game turned out to be a forfeit.   We had to reschedule because of rain.   Unfortunately that meant we rescheduled to a day that we couldn't field 9 players.   Once again, better luck next year.

Injury Report: Out: The whole team (lack of ability to show up)

Mickey decided he did not want to be tracked any longer with a Home Run Hit-O-Meter like last year.   We felt that we needed something to track however, so we've come up with the Late-O-Meter. This will track the amount of times that John Greenland comes late to the time our Manager Mickey Neal asks us to get to the park throughout the entire season. This is the current stat after 4 Games:

September 17 note: Mickey asks us to get to the park at 8:00.   Greenland arrives at 8:30.   To his credit, this was before the actual game started which is a marked improvement compared to a couple games last year.

October 15 note: Greenland volunteers to take Tod Chapman to the game.   Guess which two people came rolling in after the rest of us had taken the field?

October 22 note: Greenland arrives.....early!  In other news, hell has just recently frozen over.

Note from our Manager Mickey Neal:
