BOTH LORD & CHRIST

I CALL HIM LORD

1. Master, Redeemer, Savior of the world.
Wonderful, Counselor, Bright Morning Star.
Lily of the valley, Provider, and Friend,
He was yesterday, He'll be tomorrow, Beginning and End.

CHORUS:

But the angel called Him Jesus, born of a virgin.
Mary called Him Jesus, but I call Him Lord.

2. Jehovah, Messiah, Mighty God and King.
Bread of Life, lasting words of love that I sing.
Light and darkness, Door to heaven, my home in the sky,
The Fountain of Living Water that never shall run dry.

Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6) Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7) But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8) And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. 9) Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10) That at the name of Jesus every knee sh ould bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Phil 2:5-KJV)

In the King James version, we read that "Yeshua/Jesus was given a name which is above every name." The NIV reads this way:

Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5) our attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6) Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7) but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8) And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death-- even death on a cross! 9) Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10) that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11) and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Phil 2:4) (NIV)

Paul’s standard greeting in his letters to the churches, as well as to individuals to whom he wrote, is "Grace to you and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ." In his greetings or salutations, any mention of the Holy Spirit is conspicuously absent. (The same can also be said of Peter in the salutations of both his epistles.) Messiah was given the name that is above every name. This can only be referring to the Messiah as Jehovah.

There is no reference to any "third person of the Godhead" in the salutations of the epistles of the Apostle Paul, but he does tell the church "hello" from God our Father, and His Son Jesus Christ. Why is this so? Because every Jew knew from His earliest years that God who was understood as Father is the Eternal Spirit. The writer of Ephesians states "There is "one God and Father of all. There is one Spirit." There are not two spirits, the Father being one Spirit. The Holy Spirit being a second person of the Godhead. The writer clarifies that the one Spirit is a further definition of who the Heavenly Father is. Messiah Himself states that He is the revelation of the Father, in John 8. This is what the incarnation is all about! Those who "divide Christ" contrary to God's command, will war against this, saying: You are making Jesus and the Father "ONE." God made this happen through the incarnation. Do you understand? Paul writes: "Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized into the name of Paul?" He's reiterating the truth that God is one.

"Know therefore today, and take it to your heart, that the Lord, He is God in heaven above and on the earth below; there is no other. (Deuteronomy 4:39)

GOD IS ONE

We understand that God is One, from Deut. 6:4, and in Jesus Christ's own words, the Shema preceeds His quotation of the first and greatest commandment, linking the sriptural belief in the Godhead as ONE, to the first and greatest commandment. Thus the shema actually heads the commandments of God, in both Old Testament and New Testaments. (Deut. 6:4, Mark 12:29)

Any salutation from a 3rd century Nician "trinitarian third person" of the Godhead is conspicuously absent, in the New Testament epistles. Paul speaks some in these salutations of God's calling to His people, but speaks regarding this of "God the Father, and Christ Jesus or Jesus Christ." (1 Cor. 1:3, Eph. 1:2, Phil. 1:2, Gal. 1:1, Col. 1:2,II Thess. 1:2, I Tim. I:I,)

Messiah's own statements concerning the oneness of the Godhead, reiterate the monotheistic belief of both Old and New Testaments of the bible. He said: I and My Father are One. Jesus Christ Himself is called "revealer," in Matt. 11:27. Messiah says of the Comfortor: "I will not leave you comfortless, but "I" will come to you. We see Him do exactly this, as He appears to Saul of Tarsus on the Damascus Road, and to the dsiciple Ananias, and to the apostolic team as they assay to go to Bithynia.

Messiah said: "All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knows the Son but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal Him."

In John 14, we read scriptures which speak of the identity of the Comfortor, which many term as the "third person" of the Godhead." Yeshua equates the Comforter with the Spirit of Truth, stating: I am the Truth, the Life the Way, no man comes to the Father but through Me. So Yeshua/Jesus claims to be the one who will not leave us comfortless, but says He himself will "come to us." (John 14:18) Yeshua/Jesus appears in answer to Saul of Tarsus prayer, saying: "I Am Yeshua/Jesus" and imparting directions and instructions, to be obeyed if Saul and those who read this passage are to prosper.

In speaking to His disciples, Messiah says: "He, (the Spirit of Truth" dwells with you, but shall be in you. (John 14:17) Yeshua/Jesus, who lived as the God-man on earth, fully human, yet fully divine, said: "The Father is greater than I," in John 14:28. But this speaks of Him in His 33 and 1/2 year humanity, as the sin-bearer, the Lamb of God. As our Redeemer, the Lamb of God, he gave His life a ransom for many. This sacrifice was a sweet savour to the Father, who placed His seal of approval on it, in that He raised haMashiach/Christ from the dead.

Scripture defines this way in which Jesus Christ's Father was greater...It was "for the sufferings of death," that He was made a little lower than the angels. (Hebrews 2:7-9) In Rev. 1:8, He refers to Himself as "The Almighty." In what was does the term ALMIGHTY denote that there is anyone greater? It doesn't of course! Yet for centuries, the ignorant or unlearned ahve wrestled these statments, to their own destruction.

In the messages to the 7 Churches of Asia, we are exhorted to hear what "the Spirit" says to the Churches. (Rev 2-3) Yet the speaker identifies Himself by titles of Messiah, such as: "He that hath the 7 Spirits of God." (Seven is a number denoting that the fulness of the Godhead dwells in Him in bodily form-Rev. 5:6)

Yeshuaa/Jesus said: "He that has seen Me has seen the Father." (Matt. 11:27, John 10:30) God is still the Holy One of Israel... Those who would "divide Christ," are rebuked, when Paul the Apostle poses the very question "Is Christ divided?" The answer is an emphatic "No!" Messiah is not third person of the Godhead, simply because "God prepared Himself a body." (Psalm 40:6, Heb. 10:5) God is one!

The Prophet Isaiah uses the term "The Holy One" of God Himself, no less than 30 times. "The Holy One," is an Old Testament title of God, seen in Habakkuk 3:3.

"God came from Teman, and the from Mount Paran." SELAH! We also see this in Hosea 11:9. For I am God and not man, the Holy One in the midst of thee. In the New Testament, when Jesus our Messiah, confronted the demonic kingdom, one of the evil spirits exposed something that the powers of darkness do understand, and that is who Messiah is. When in the synagogue, Messiah encountered a demon possessed man with an unclean spirit, the evil spirit cried out with a loud voice, saying:

"Let us alone! What have we to do with thee, Jesus Son of Nazareth? Are you come to destroy us? I know you who you are, the Holy One of God." (Luke 4:34)

Jesus answered: Hold your peace and come out of him! And all marveled at the authority with which the Saviour commanded demons to come out." The evil spirit called Jesus: "The Holy One," and Apostle Paul, speaking by the power of the Holy One, confirms that God is ONE, when he states "Thou believest God is ONE? "Even the demons believe and tremble." (James 2:19) This clearly shows us that Messianic believers of the early church, had a "oneness belief," which did not compartmentalize the Godhead.

VINES EXPOSITORY DICTIONARY

2962 kurios (koo'-ree-os); from kuros (supremacy); supreme in authority, i.e. (as noun) controller; by implication, Mr. (as a respectful title):

LORD, LORDSHIP KJV-- God, Lord, master, Sir.

1. kurios (2962), properly an adjective, signifying "having power" (kuros) or "authority," is used as a noun, variously translated in the NT, "Lord, `master,Master, owner,Sir, a title of wide significance, occurring in each book of the NT save Titus and the Epistles of John. It is used (a) of an owner, as in (Luke 19:33) Matt. 20:8; Acts 16:16; Gal. 4:1>; or of one who has the disposal of anything, as the Sabbath, (Matt. 12:8); (b) of a master, i. e., one to whom service is due on any ground, (Matt. 6:24; 24:50; Eph. 6:5); (c) of an Emperor or King, (Acts 25:26; Rev. 17:14); (d) of idols, ironically, (1 Cor. 8:5), cf. (Isa. 26:13); (e) as a title of respect addressed to a father, , a husband, (1 Pet. 3:6), a master, (Matt. 13:27; Luke 13:8), a ruler, ; (f) as a title of courtesy addressed to a stranger, "Thus the usage of the word in the New Testament follows two main thoughts:

"Christ Himself assumed the title, (cf. ; the parallel passage, , has `God');

Luke 8: 39 Return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee. And he went his way, and published throughout the whole city how great things Yeshua/Jesus had done unto him. (KJV)

Luke 8:39 Return to thy house, and declare how great things God hath done for thee. And he went his way, publishing throughout the whole city how great things Yeshua/Jesus had done for him. (ASV)

Luke 8:39 "Return home and tell how much God has done for you." So the man went away and told all over town how much Yeshua/Jesus had done for him. (NIV)

Luke 19:31; John 13:13, apparently intending it in the higher senses of its current use, and at the same time suggesting its OT associations.

"It was not until after His resurrection that Messiah's purpose became clear to His disciples.

Thomas, on realizing the significance of the presence of a crusifixion wound in the body of His living Saviour, the Messiah, immediately received the Revelation of Jesus Christ as Messiah, saying, "My Lord and my God," (John 20:28) Following this, except in Acts 10:4 and Rev. 7:14, there's no record that kurios was ever again used by believers in addressing any except God and the Lord Jesus; ---- (Acts 2:47 with 4:29,30)

Peter declared Him saying in his sermon after the resurrection: "God hath made Him both Lord and Christ." (Acts 2:36) In the house of Cornelius, He is referred to as "Lord of all." (Acts 10:36, (Deut. 10:14; Matt. 11:25; Acts 17:24) In his writings we see in his teaching Ps. 34:8 "O taste and see that Jehovah is good," applied to the Lord Jesus. (1 Pet. 2:3) and Jehovah of Hosts, Him shall ye sanctify." (Isa. 8:13) becomes "sanctify in your hearts Christ as Lord." (3:15)

The Apostle James uses kurios of God, in James 1:7. (cf. ); 3:9; 4:15; 5:4,10,11, and of the Lord Jesus Christ. 1:1,1 Thes. 3:11, should not be overlooked); 2:1 (lit."our Lord Jesus Christ of glory," cf. "Jude in verse 4, speaks of our only Lord, Yeshua haMashiach/Jesus Christ," and immediately, (v. 5), uses the term Lord of God.

"Paul ordinarily uses the word "kurios" of the Lord Yeshua/Jesus, such as in 1 Cor. 1:3. but on occasion, of God, in quotations from the OT, as we read in 1 Cor. 3:20.

In 1 Cor. 3:5, v. 10. It is equally appropriate to either in 1 Cor. 7:25; 2 Cor. 3:16; 8:21; 1 Thes. 4:6, and if 1 Cor. 11:32> is to be interpreted by 10:21,22, the Lord Jesus is intended, but if by Heb. 12:5-9, then kurios here also God. 1 Tim. 6:15,16 is probably to be understood of the Lord Jesus, cf. Rev. 17:14.

"The Apostle John doesn't use "Lord" in his Epistles, and though, like the other Evangelists, he ordinarily uses the personal Name in his narrative, yet he occasionally speaks of Him as "the Lord," (John 4:1; 6:23; 11:2; 20:20; 21:12).

"The major significance of this association of Yeshua /Jesus with God under the one the one title of "Lord," is seen when it is remembered that these men belonged to the only monotheistic race in the world, that of the Jewish people, who believe that God is one.

"It's not recorded that in the days of Messiah's flesh, any of His disciples addressed the Lord, or spoke of Him, by His personal name. They called Him "Lord," attesting to Him as the long awaited Messiah. The Apostle Paul on occasion speaks of what the Lord Yeshua/Jesus said. (Acts 20:35), or did, (1 Cor. 11:23), and His sufferings, (1 Thes. 2:15; 5:9,10) It is our Lord Yeshua/Jesus who is coming, (1 Thes. 2:19), etc. In prayer the title is given as that of Lord, (3:11; Eph. 1:3) The sinner is invited to believe on the Lord Yeshua/Jesus, (Acts 16:31; 20:21), and the believer to look to the Lord Yeshua/Jesus for deliverance, in Rom. 7:24, 25, and in the few exceptional cases in which the personal Name stands alone, is always discernible in the context.

"The title "Lord," as given to the Savior, in its full significance rests on the resurrection, Acts 2:36; Rom. 10:9; 14:9, and is realized fully in the risen Lord. (1 Cor. 12:3)."

Matt 1:16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

Matt 8:29 And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time?

Matt 9:4 And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts?

Matt 9:28 And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord.

Matt 14:25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.

Matt 20:30 And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David. (KJV)

Matt 28:5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. 6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

The Angel referred to him by his personal name, Yeshua/Jesus, then said "see the place where Jehovah or the Lord lay."

Mark 5:19 Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things0 the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee. 20 And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel.

Luke 17:13 And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. 14 And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed. 15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, 16 and fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan.

They glorified God and fell down at his feet.

17 And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? 18 There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.

Luke 24:46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: 47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

The Old Testament spoke of how the Christ was to suffer and that his name would be preached among all nations. The New Testament scriptures refer to the death of Jesus and of him being preached, not just Jehovah or Lord.

John 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. 4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was. 6 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.

John 17:12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.

John 17:26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.

Jesus was not referred to as being a proclaimer of the Name Jehovah or Lord, but rather of his own personal name. We have no other evidence.

John 18:5 They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. 6 As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.

These people asked for Jesus and he affirmed that he was the "I am." This is the meaning of the word Jehovah. In other words they asked for Jesus and he acknowledged who he was, but he used the name Jehovah or its equivalent. This ties the name Jesus into the name Jehovah through the testimony of Jesus himself.

John 20:31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

Who is the Christ? It is Yeshua haMashiach/Jesus Christ.

Acts 1:11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Acts 3:6 Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.

Acts 4:10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.

Acts 5:40 And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

Acts 8:12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.

Acts 8:12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.

Acts 8:12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. (KJV)

When the name Jehovah was used to refer to the apostles God and it was not a forbidden word. The persecution that arose against them was because of the definitive name of Yesua/Jesus as Messiah and the authority ascribed to both him and his name.

Those who do not accept the name Yeshua/Jesus as interchangeable with the name Jehovah look at this type of usage as an implication that the name referred to is Lord or Jehovah. But look closely at the following usage of the name Jesus.

Acts 4:2 Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead.

Acts 427 For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together,

Acts 4:30 By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Yeshua/Jesus.

Acts 5:42 And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Yeshua haMashiach/Jesus Christ.

Acts 6:14 For we have heard him say, that this Yeshua/Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place, and shall change the customs which Moses delivered us.

There are out right attacks by Christians against using the name Jesus as being the definitive name of their God.

Acts 8:35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Yeshua/Jesus.

Acts 9:4 And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? 5 And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.

Acts 9:17 And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.

The Lord, even Jesus - Note the hesitation that is included below in the NIV. They inserted a couple of dashes between the Lord and Jesus. ?? You see if we leave out the even we can put the emphasis on the word Lord. By doing this we can de-emphasize the name Jesus. But, why??

Acts 9:17 Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord-- Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here-- has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit." (NIV)

In many scriptures the wording Christ Jesus or Yeshua haMashiach/Jesus Christ is used.
