*Note: George Fitch was a haberdasher or mercer who settled first in Braintree. He later lived in Sudbury, Suffolk County, and eventually in Edwardstone, a small village to the east of Sudbury. A haberdasher sold and manufactured various types of clothing, underwear and hats. George became a mercer when he moved to Sudbury. A mercer was defined as one who deals in textile fabrics, especially a dealer in silks, velvets, and other costly materials.
