THE FOLLY OF OPPOSING GOD'S REVELATION OF HIMSELF AS ONE (Deut. 6:4-Col. 2:8-10)

Baruch haShem Adonai Yeshua haMashiach! Beginning on the 25th of Kislev, approximately 2 monthes after the end of Sukkot, comes the celebration of the Feast of Dedication or Hanukkah. Hanukkah means "Dedication," and is used to dedicate to remembrance, the bravery of the great victory of the Jewish people, over the Syrian-Greeks, and the cleansing and restoration of the Temple.

The story dates back more than 2000 years to a time when Israel was occupied by the Assyrians. In the year in which Hanukkah first occurred, some believe it was celebrated as a second Sukkot, because the Jews had been strictly restricted from celebrating Sukkot, and it was because of this, that Hanukkah took on aspects of the Sukkot celebration, such as the joy of Sukkot and it's 8 day length, which included Shemini Atzeret.

The Syrian rulers of Israel allowed the Jewish people to follow their own monotheistic religion, or belief in the "one God," as defined in the Shema, in Deut. 6:4. The Jews had built a magnificant Temple in Jerusalem, the most holy city, and they followed the teachings of the Torah.

The story of Hanukkah takes place in and near where the ancient Jewish Temple once stood. The outer remaining wall of that Temple still remains, and is called today, Kotel, or "The Western Wall." It is a place where Jewish people go to pray.

ALEXANDER THE GREAT

In 336 B.C.E., Alexander the Great, King of Macedonia, crossed with his army from his native Greece into Asia, defeating Darius, King of Persia, and thus he became ruler of the Persian empire, including Syria, Palestine and Egypt. Alexander was a proud admirer of Greek culture, introducing it into the countries he invaded, including Egypt and Syria, Judea's neighbors to the north and south.

He worshipped the pantheon or family of gods, bowing himself before the shrines and images of his pagan deities, supposed to possess powers over the lives and activities of men, including the military. To the Greeks, unlike the monotheistic Jewish people, every element of the sea, earth and sky represented a god. Alexander the Great fought and successfully won many battles, bringing into the subjugated nations, his religion and culture, which today is called "Hellenization." In his lifetime, he allowed the Jews to live according to their own laws, but his reign lasted only a decade.

THE REIGN OF ANTIOCHUS EPIHANES

When Alexander the Great died in 323 B.C.E, a battle ensued for the small country of Judea, with both Egypt and Syria wanting to include it in their kingdom. Palestine was a strategic location as a bridge between Africa and Asia. Caught between the Ptolomies, the rulers of Egypt, to the south, and the Selucids, the rulers of Syria to the north, the Egyptian Ptolemies to the south ruled it until 198 B.C.E, when the northern kingdom of the Selucid dynasty took control.

When the Selucids won Palestine, the Selucid king, Antiochus IV Epiphanes, a descendant of one of the generals of Alexander the Great, became the Syrian ruler. He took over the Graeco-Syrian throne in approximately 175 b.c. Far less tolorant than his predecessors, Antiochus Epiphanes goal was to enforce hellenization upon all the people of the empire, especially the Jews, and it spread rapidly, with many adopting the dress, philosophies, manners and speech of the Greeks.

It was Antichus belief that Hellenization was the only way to strengthen his empire against the northern Egyptians. Under his reign, he enforced Greek citizenship on the subjects of his realm. Throughout his kingdom, he erected shrines to the Grecian god Zeus, king of the sky. The coinage of his kingdom was stamped with his face, and his name touted as "The Manifest God."

Most of the empire liked the Grecian way of life. There were Jews in Palestine who came under the influence of the Hellenistic culture. Some Jews took on Greek trades, or changed their names from Hebrew names to Greek. Antiochus built a large gymnasium in close proximity to the Jewish Temple, where Jews worshipped and held their annual feasts. Prior to the games, the Greeks offered sacrifices to their gods. They hosted a parade in Grecian sports which began to have an impact on the Jewish community, with some Jews choosing to participate in the Greek games.

ANTICHUS INSTALLS JASON

To force the Jewish population to assimilate, Antiochus deposed the High Priest Onias III, and replaced him with his own brother Joshua, a Hellenized Jew, who had changed his Jewish name to the Greek name Jason. Jason ruled for 3 years. Feeling that Hellenization was to Jewish advantage, he changed the name of Jerusalem to Antiochea. Many Jews coming under the influence of Hellenization, worshipped the God of the Jews and Zeus.

Antiochus, felt in time that another ruler could have greater influence than that of Jason, and in time replaced him with the more extreme Hellenistic High Priest Menelaus, a leader of the Syrian party. With the selection of Menelaus, the Jewish High Priesthood was not determined by heredity, as it had previously been by divine decree.

The Hassidim were violently opposed to Menelaus, whose role was to stamp out the remnant of Jewish faith, and to complete the Hellenization of the kingdom. With little respect for anything Jewish, he robbed the Temple to use what he could for his personal gain. Severe persecution of the Jews began. Followers of Jason attempted a coup, when rumors surfaced that Antichus had been killed in Egypt, resulting in the s of 40,000 Jews. Antiochus, upon returning, was enraged at what he found. He promptly forbid the observance of Judaism, forced Jews to eat swines flesh, ed Jewish mothers and their infants, and burned holy books.

THE PLUNDERING OF THE TEMPLE

After defeating Rome, Antichus plundered the Temple in Jerusalem, attempting to forcibly Hellenize Judea. He issued a decree that all people were to serve pagan deities and he introduced Syrian cults into the Temple. The practice of Judaism was strictly prohibited, under penalty of death.

In 167 b.c. Antiochus erected a statue of Zeus on the altar, extinguished the light of the Temple menorah, and instituted the slaughter of swine on the great altar, placing Greek images in the Temple, and enforcing this throughout Judea.

THE MACCABEAN REBELLION

In 167 B.C.E, representatives of Antiochus Ephiphanes army came to the mountain village of Modin, near Lydda, below the hills of Jerusalem, to set up a meeting with an elderly and highly respected priest of the Hasmonean family. When they could not obtain the allegiance of Mattathias and his 5 sons by flatteries, and promises of wealth, they devised another plan, whereby they attempted to force the aged priest to kill a pig and eat it, believing other Jews of the village would follow his example.

The old priest Mattathias, refused, and a villager, impressed with the promises of wealth, for those who would embrace the Grecian religion, stepped forward to obey the soldiers command, and receive his reward. Mattathius promptly slew the man who complied with the order, and one of the soldiers, and raised his voice in a battle-cry, which rang through the hills: "Whoever is for God, follow me!"

With his 5 sons, Yochanan, Simon, Judah, Eliazer, and Jonathan, Mattathias attracted a band of guerilla fighters, who fled into the mountains, securing for themselves a stronghold from which they launched successful guerilla warfare against 1000's of Syrians, by using whatever weapons they could make or find. They ambushed their enemies, launching their assaults, attacking swiftly, and vanishing silently in the rocky terrain they knew so well. Mattathias was joined by the Hassidim, and others wanting to liberate Jerusalem. Antiochus chose the Jewish Sabbath to retaliate. Mattathias would not fight on the Sabbath, and over 1000 of his men were killed.

Lysias appointed 2 Syrian generals named Gorgias and Nicanor, to lead his 20,000 soldiers in a campaign against the Maccabean army, staging he warfare on the Judean plain outside the town of Emmaeus. Judah defeated the Syrian general Lysias, with continued surprise attacks from the hills. Lysias retreated to Syria, and the 10,000 member army of Maccabees advanced to liberate Jerusalem, and to restore the Temple. When Mattathias fell ill and died at over 100 years of age, his son Judah the Maccabee (Judah the Hammer) took over. The family name was also called Hashmon, and the Maccabees Hasmoneans.

THE MIRACLE OF THE OIL

Following the of Mattathias, the enemy grew bolder, fighting with horses and elephants. But Judah who was called haMakkabi, "The Hammer," assumed the leadership role. The letters of his name are said to have stood for the rebels password and battlecry, Mikamokah be'elim, Adonai! (Who is like you among the gods, O Almighty!) He and his men fought with lion-like courage, camping outside Jerusalem through the long winter. On the 25th of Kislev, 164 b.c. Judah and his men stormed the gates of the city of Jerusalem.

Upon taking Jerusalem, the Maccabees were grieved to discover their temple desecrated, the torahs, temple vessels stolen. They immediately set about cleansing the Temple, now 3 years after it's desecration. The defiled altar was removed, and a new one erected. New sacred Temple vessels were made. The Menorah, made of gold, a 7-branched lampstand, one for each day of the week, was supposed to have burned continuiously, but this had been extinguished. When the time came to light the N'er Tamid, the Eternal Light of the Temple, a search was made, and only one jar of oil could be found, which was sufficient to burn for just one day. A miracle occurred and the oil lasted a miraculous 8 days. Hanukkah was instituted, as "The Feast of Dedication," in commumoration of the rededication of the Temple, with the Hallel being sung to God in thankfulness for His saving power. He is the saving strength of His anointed. Aside from being a war against Antiochus and his tyrrany, this had become a civil war between assimilist Jews and religious faithful Jewish people.

THE SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE OF HANUKKAH

When the Greeks entered the Temple, they desecrated the oil for the Holy of Holies. There was but one jar of oil, which God made to last for 8 miraculous days. In Zechariah 4:1-14, God gives the Prophet a marvellous vision of the golden lampstand with it's 7 branches, and 2 olive trees standing on either side of it, providing the miraculous oil, saying: "Who has despised the day of small things?"

Yeshua haMashiach, in whom God incarnated Himself, unlike the pagan gods, is testified of by Nathanael, a Galilean Jew, one of the 12 apostles of the Lamb, whom some identify with Bartholomew, said: "Rabbai: You are the Son of God, you are the King of Israel!" The Jewish Apostle Paul, whose witness of Messiah was a blessing to the children of Israel, and a light to the Gentiles, wrote: "Now unto the king eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory forever, and ever amen." (1 Timothy 1:17) And again, "That you keep this commandment without spot, unrebukable, until the appearing of our Yeshua haMashiach/Lord Jesus Christ, Which in his times, he shall show the blessed and only Potentate, the King of Kings, and Lord of Lords, who only has immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power for everlasting." (1 Tim. 614-16)

The phrase "Until the appearing," means "Until the epiphany or coming of Christ." (II Thess. 2:18, Titus 2:13, II Tim. 1:10; 4:1,8) The text translated "blessed and only Potentate," means literally the "The happy and alone Potentate."

Yeshua, who healed the sick, raised the , cast out demons, calmed the storm on the sea, told his followers: "Greater things shall you do!"

In contemporary times, we kindle the candles of the menorah, but in ancient times, the lampstand contained small bowls for oil, and the menorah stayed lit with a continual supply of fresh oil.

In the book of revelation, again, we see a lampstand with 7 Golden Candlesticks, and Yeshua haMashiach, himself, with the appearance of the Ancient of Days in the Prophet Daniel's vision, standing as our Great High Priest, amid the burning candles. (Rev. 1:12-20)

Hanukkah celebrates victory not only over external enemies, but internal enemies as well, such as ease-loving, integrity-compromising, etc. Hanukkah celebrates for us the truth that miracles come from God who said: "Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit saith the Lord." (Zechariah 4:6)

Messiah Yeshua haMashiach, the "Light of the World," used the Festival of Dedication to declare the ONENESS OF GOD, saying: say: "I and My Father are ONE." (John 10:22-30)

CELEBRATING THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS

Yeshua haMashiach/Jesus Christ, "The Light of the World," is symbolized in the shamash or servant candle, whose light, illumines all others. Messiah cried: I AM the light of the world: he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life! (John 8:12) How have 120 in that upper room in Jerusalem--3000 at Pentecost, and millions throughout time, walked in the light of Messiah? At Pentecost, we read the account of what the Jewish Apostle Peter has said with regard to the fire which rested on the heads of the 120 in the upper room in Jerusalem at Pentecost, in Acts 2:33:

"Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father, the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured forth this, which you now see and hear."

And again, when on Pentecost, 3000 heard Peter preach, showing forth the long awaited Messiah, he brought forth what the prophets foretold, in many Old Testament passages of scripture, commanding by the word of the Lord:

"Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Yeshua haMashiach/Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, for this promise is to you and to your children and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.(Acts 2:38-39)

As the old proverb states: "Better to light one candle than to curse the darkness," and Hanukkah is a reminder of what can be done with unified spiritual light and holy strength.

ORIGINS OF HANUKKAH TRADITIONS

Yeshua haMashiach/JESUS CHRIST IS THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD

(Recalling the Miracles)

Messiah was no legalist. He is seen in scripture using an extra-biblical holiday, to say: I am the Light of the world. By this, I mean a holiday not expressly commanded by God to be observed. Yet many find in a special holiday or feast day, a time to reflect in a special way on sacred things, and to share these with family and friends. In reading the scriptures together as a family this week, I'll share with you this thought:

...Unto us a child is born, and unto us a Son is given, and the government shall be upon His shoulder: and His (the child's) name shall be called: Wonderful, Counsellor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government, and peace, there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon His kingdom to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even forever...The zeal of the Lord of Hosts will perform this. (Isaiah 9:6-7)

As we reflect on the miracle of Hanukkah, we recall the Messiah as the Light of Life, and our Guiding Light through the years. It was during winter, and the Jewish Feast of Dedication, (Hanukkah) that Jesus Christ walked in the Temple, in Solomon's Porch. (John 10:21-23)

The Jews came to Him, saying: If you be the haMashiach/Christ, show us plainly. Messiah replied: I showed you and you did not believe. The works I do in My Father's name, they bear witness of Me. My sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow me. (John 10:25-26)

We accepted Yeshua haMashiach/Jesus Christ as our Messiah many years ago, through the testimony of the bible, God's word, which is a more sure word of prophecy, hidden manna, and the lamplight which God has ordained to never go out, but to ever be our guiding light. It was in the pages of God's book, that we came to a saving knowledge of Him in the 1970's, and have come to know Him in an ever unfolding revelation of God, throughout the years.

And yes, we also have the testimony of His many miracles, which bear witness of Him. The psalmist encouraged himself in the Lord, and nourished his faith by recalling the past miracles of God. He said: The God who delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, will deliver me from the hand of this uncircumcized Philistine. (Goliath the Giant) (1 Sam 17:37)

May we all recall the miracles which we have been priviledged to see, past present and yet to come, which have been ours because of the atoning work of Messiah, which brought salvation, healing and deliverance.

I read a book about hidden messages written into the Hebrew scriptures. One of my favorites is a title for Messiah: "Yeshua The Pomegranate," and the verse this message is inscribed into is so appropriate.

Say unto them, thus saith the Lord: Behold, I will take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel his fellows, and will put them with him, even with the stick of Judah, and make them one stick, and they shall be one in mine hand.

(Ezekiel 37:19)

The lowly pomegranate is a frequently seen Israeli motif. It's seen in the 200 ornately carved brasswork pomegranates within the temple, (1 Kings 7:18, 2 Kgs.25:17, 2 Chron. 3:16) and pomegranates and bells on the intricately embroidered hem of the garment of Aaron the High Priest. (Ex. 28:34) The 12 spies brought back pomegranates, grapes and figs. (Num. 13:23) Artists often depict it with one side broken open to reveal it's garnet coloured jewel-like contents.

The outside of the fruit, causes us to recall this about Messiah, which is similar to the symbology seen in the covering of badger skin over the tabernacle: "He hath no form nor comliness, and when we shall see Him, there is no beauty that any should desire Him.

He was despised and rejected of men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from Him. Yet, "surely He hath borne our griefs and carried our sorrows. He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him, and with His stripes we are healed." (Is 53:1-5, 1 Pet. 2:24)

For it pleased the Lord to bruise Him... He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand. (Isaiah 53:10-12)

One of the earliest Messianic prophecies, is found in Gen. 3, stating that the "seed of the woman, shall bruise Satan's head." This spoke of Messiah, who through His atoning sacrifice, "spoiled principalities and powers, making an open show of them, but also of the work God will do through His people in the end times, in the building of the end-time Temple of God, which scripture tells us is the "body of Mashicah/Christ. "And I saw no Temple therein, (speaking of seeing no earthly temple made with hands, in that heavenly realm) for the Lord God Almighty, and the Lamb are the Temple of it." (Rev. 21:22-24) The day is coming in which there shall be a new heaven and new earth, with no more sea. John saw a vision, and he saw the holy city, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. (Rev. 21:1-2) But before that glorious day, there is a fore-taste of heaven, in which the nations shall walk in His light, and His light shall be seen in and through the lives of believers like a city set on a hill, here in this life! (Mark 16:16-18)

When the pomegranate is broken open, it bleeds, and the wine of the pomegranate pours forth, it's garnet coloured jewel-like seeds revealed by it's blood so to speak, reminding us of the blood bought church of the redeemed, which came forth through that piercing of His hands, His feet, and his side with a Roman spear, as He hung on the cross as the Sacrificial Lamb, which takes away the sins of the world. This is especially seen in pomegranates of brass in the Temple, as brass speaks of the judgment Messiah walked through to effect redemption for mankind. Seeing those brilliant red seeds like so many sparkling gems knit together as one, we think of the blood of Messiah, Yeshua haMashiach/Jesus Christ, shed for the sins of the world, of the truth the we are one in Him, in God, for Yeshua and His Father are one. Ephesians 4:16, speaks of the whole body fitly joined together, compacted by what every joint supplies. The Lord make you fruitful in every good work.

Once when I was going through an extremely difficult time, a prophetic friend called us, because God placed the need, upon their heart. I marveled at this, because I knew it was "spiritually perceived." There are times when a person has a deep grief or personal need, when only God can intervene. The spirit of all else, seems boorish and invasive. Nothing is desired from those who are self-righteous and insensitive, who approach like Job's Comfortors! There is no closeness, like the revelation God's covenant brings. Do you know that the difference between covenant and "revelation of covenant relationship?" In the Old Testament, when covenant was entered into, one might remove his weapon belt and give it as a covenant token, as if to say: I will always fight for you. David and Jonathan had this kind of covenant love. In 1 Cor. 12:26, we see that "When one suffers, we all suffer with it, or when one is honoured, we rejoice, for we are one body, in Messiah.

God gave me a vision of myself wrapped in a tallit or prayer shawl, and it was bright blue, with pomegranates of various colours, all over it, like those on skirts of Aaron's garments, and the oil, that ran down over his head and beard, falling down upon this garment too. My husband brings the children and I wonderful pomegranates, when he wishes to bring us a special treat. One day, I will paint some of them in a bowl, perhaps in these colours I saw in my vision, which the Lord gave to me.

The Prophet Zechariah, spoke God's people as "sons of oil," and of the building up of Messiah's house, in this way, saying: Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit says the Lord. (Zech. 4:6) This doesn't mean there is no physical work to be engaged in. But we pray, and God helps us to do those things, He wants done, by the leading of His Spirit, (Romans 8:14) and by this, we work most efficiently, for the kingdom of God, demonstrating that as believers we are "the sons or children of God."

Messiah calls His seed, "children of light," amid a crooked perverse generation. So be glad then you children of Zion, and rejoice in the Lord your God...God poured out His Spirit at Pentecost, in Acts 2:1-4, and He continues to pour it out today, to all who will follow the scriptural admonition: Repent, be baptized every one of you in the name of Yeshua haMashiach/Jesus Christ, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Both John 1:33, and Acts 2:33, tell us Messiah shed forth the Holy Spirit.

From Acts 10:46-48, we see this gift is accompanied by the recipient speaking in a new heavenly language only God can give, called in Mark 16:16-18, speaking in tongues. Believers will in fact manifest a number of supernatural signs, such as casting out demons, speaking with new tongues, taking up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing it shall not hurt them. We see an example of Apostle Paul "taking up a serpent, purely by accident, as he gathers fire wood, and a poison viper fastens itself upon his hand. Through the power of God's indwelling Holy Spirit, he shook it off into the fire, unharmed! We can also believe for divine protection concerning the "accidental injesting of poisonous or chemical substances." We must use wisdom concerning our health, for Proverbs says "wisdom will preserve you and understanding shall keep you." But sometimes things happen, and God loves us and wants to prolong our lives, as we live in service to our Heavenly King.

The bible also records the failure of Messiah's disciple's to "remember His miracles," as a source of encouragment, and a strengthener of their faith. "For they considered not the miracles of the loaves; for their heart was hardened. The miracles were not for them- seves alone, but these included the miracle provision of others.

The Lord has testified to us in miracles of salvation, deliverance, healing, protection, and provision, throughout the years, and has been good to the Campbell family. Our marriage in 1984 was God's leading and provision, and he confirmed this prophetically through three totally unrelated people at our wedding.

I can remember each one.

God has been good concerning of our children's lives. We have experienced many miracles of protection and provision, and for this we are so thankful. We believe Psalm 68:19, which says that God daily loads us with benefits.

With the ending of this season, we recall God's miracles, that we might encourage ourselves in the Lord and strengthen our faith for the future. Not simply because we have seen miracles, as the Lord said, but because you ate the loaves and were filled. (John 6:26)

Miracles are not given to scratch an intellectual itch, such as "I wonder if God is real." They are the by- product of a life of faith. God does miracles for His glory. They are so common, that it is necessary to maintain an appreciation through praise, worship and thanksgiving to God for the good things He has done.

As we grow older, our thankfulness abounds, for the revelation of Yeshua haMashiach/Jesus Christ, as "Our Lord and God--The Almighty. (Rev. 1:8) The ONLY wise God. (1 Tim. 1:17) The blessed and ONLY Potentate. (1 Tim. 6:15) For our marriage of nearly 20 years. For God's covenant which includes healing, but more so, divine health, depending upon one's level of faith. We are in excellent health. God has given us a revelation based upon Colossians 2:9, "For in Him, (Messiah) dwells the fulness of the Godhead in bodily form, and you are complete in Him, which is the head of all principality and power." The Godhead which we see in the scriptures, is not divided. God is one and we confess nothing else. (Deut. 6:4, Eph. 4:5,) He that is joined to the Lord is "one Spirit." (1 Cor. 6:17) We have had no surgeries, and take no medication. God has blessed this family with so many miracles. We read in the New Testament, this concerning Messiah: "Who, His own self bare our sins in His own body,on the tree, (cross of calvary) that we being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. (past tense)" Salvation is a finished work. We must appropriate the atoning work Messiah has already done.

Our children are strong in body. We see the work of God in their lives. We and our children, have experienced miracles of divine protection many times, and our lives have been preserved.

In the lives of those who name Christ as Saviour and Lord, opportunities pass in and out of our lives. Things come to birth, and they die, that as Yeshua/Jesus said: If we believe, we will see the glory of God. Often times the those things which die trouble us, because we don't have all the answers. But if we maintain a heart of faith, not in the provision but in the Saviour, in every loss are the germ seeds of another new miracle. For as we seek the Lord, He visits us, and no visitation of God ever leaves us empty handed, for Yeshua/Jesus cares...

May you know in the coming year, how deeply He cares for you, not only in your blessings, but also in your painful loses. Knowing this, that we are not forsaken, but He is with us even till the end of the world.
