On Board SS RAJULA - BRITISH INDIA STEAM NAVIGATION CO.
One of the more enduring memories I have, concerns Christmas Day in 1972. I believe we were alongside in Madras at the time. As was the custom, the old man used to invite all the officers for drinks prior to the Christmas lunch. Our C/E/O at the time Jim McCrindle, true to his frugal Scottish nature, imbibed somewhat freely of the Skipper's booze. By the time we actually sat down for lunch, the Chief was nowhere to be found. A scouting party later found him sleeping (well, sort of!) alongside #3 hatch, oblivious to the cargo discharging operations that were underway at the time. Strangely enough, his comatose presence next to the hatch was completely ignored by the local stevedores unloading the ship!
