This is considered a masterpiece in the world. In the past I read about it and when I was in Rome I saw it. I experienced some power but I did not know if it was because I read about it or that it had that effect on me.
A Gargoyle is a grotesquely carved human or animal figure found on an architectural structure, originally designed (believe it or not) to serve as a
spout to throw rainwater clear of a building. They later became strictly ornamental and assumed many forms.
These are gargoyles keeping watch atop Notre Dame.

Gargoyles have an interesting part in history. They can be found throughout the world. I have never seen any mention of the people who actually carved
them. Perhaps I have not looked hard enough.

Bernini, Gian Lorenzo (1598-1680), the single most important artistic talent of the Italian baroque. Although most significant as a sculptor, he was also highly gifted as an architect; painter; draftsman; designer of stage sets, fireworks displays, and funeral trappings; and playwright. His art is the quintessence of high baroque energy and robustness. In sculpture his ability to suggest textures of skin or cloth as well as to capture emotion and movement was uncanny. Bernini reformed a number of sculptural genres, including the portrait bust, the fountain, and the tomb. His influence was widespread throughout the 17th and 18th centuries and was felt by such masters as Pierre Puget from France, the Italian Pietro Bracci, and the German Andreas Schlüter.

Gigantic marble, started in 1501 and completed in 1504 Michelangelo began work on the colossal figure of David in 1501, and by 1504 the sculpture (standing at 4.34m/14 ft 3 in tall) was in place outside the Palazzo Vecchio. The choice of David was supposed to reflect the power and determination of Republican Florence and was under constant attack from supporters of the usurped Medicis. In the 19th century the statue was moved to the Accademia.
