This is my oldest, and my only son. He is going to be 12 in January.
Drew was born with Attention Defecit Disorder and Tourette's Syndrome.
We had a rough time when he was a baby, he hated to
sleep and he would do terrible things to himself so he wouldn't end up falling asleep!
He would gouge at his eyes..he has scars from this since the nurses in the hospital
"forgot" to put his hands in some kind of mittens.
He pulled his eyelashes out, his hair out, left deep gouges in his cheeks..
all so he didnt have to go to sleep and screaming the whole time.
We used to pass him back and forth between anyone who wanted to help,
while we rocked him back and forth hard to try to get him to sleep.
This behavior continued throughout his toddler years...when he was in kindergarten
the teachers where having problems getting him to pay attention,
he would often blurt out things without raising his hand..make noises, sing, humm,
fidget in his seat...
thats when they decided that he should see someone for ADHD. The doctors believed
he had it..and put him on Ritalin...
after lots of Dr's..and lots of problems with it...we finally took him to a team of
specialist in Ann Arbor Michigan...
where they did extensive test and reveiled that he also had Tourette's Syndrome
He doesn't have the worst type..and hopefully never will get it...
He has vocal tics(where he makes noises, like cars, humms, clears his throat..etc),
and facial tics
(where he rolls his eyes, moves his mouth from side to side..etc),
the tics come and go..the ones that I hate the most are the ones where he is constantly
cracking his neck...drives me insane..but I know that he can't help it..
He is smart as a whip, in fact when he was having difficulty in school with reading,
the school gave him an IQ test and based on it..
they decided that he was too smart to get help with reading..his IQ
was higher than normal kids (which is often the case with kids that have ADHD).
He enjoys riding bike, playing soccer & football.
Science and math are his favorite subjects.
When he grows up he wants to be a Paleontologist (study Dinosaurs)
He has wanted to be this since he was 2 1/2 yrs old...
about died when he told me at that age..
mom I'm going to be a Paleontologist when I grow up...I just said huh?
Felt like a real idiot considering that I didn't know what that was..
Had to have my 2 1/2yr old explain it to me!
He hasn't changed his career goals so far...maybe one day he will..
but for now...they remain the same!
