Wai Xing Zhan Shi 2 main
Just like the Motavia page of the same name. But this time Dezolis! Bonus unnecessary commentary too! Most of the towns are intact. Although it looks like Meese and Reshel were merged. Or at least I think so. Dezolis is also home to this game's only optional dungeon. The overworld music is pretty nice too.
When you crash land on Dezolis the cutscene with Raja automatically plays. You then appear outside of Raja's Temple with him in your party. While the temple appears as a town icon on the overworld map, you cannot enter it. I guess it's just for show.
The Dezolis overworld looks pretty good. For some reason there's an ocean surrounding the megacontinent. There are lakes too. In the original these lakes are completely frozen over. Here it looks like there could be some underground volcanic activity warming up the water. Hot springs!
And just as normal, only a little ways north you will find Ryuon. This is the first place on Dezolis that you can actually enter.
This is Tyler. Overall they did a pretty good job. It looks like it's supposed to look. The placement of the trees can be rather inconvenient though. That strange looking smurf-like figure in the bottom right corner is an NPC. I guess it's supposed to be a parka. But all I see is smurfsuit.
Tyler's grave. As you can see, they just took the tile for the house doors and stuck it onto the grave. It doesn't look a whole lot like a grave. But they get points for trying. At least they put it in the right place and raised it on a little plateau.
Here's the Ice Digger. It looks good. You don't actually get to dig through the ice. You just drive over it. I wasn't expecting anything that complex anyway.
This is Meese/Reshel. Based on in-game events I think maybe they were combined. But I'm not sure since I can't read Chinese. No filter because I just recently grabbed this. All the torches scattered through town feel randomly placed and there's an NPC on the lower half of town that really gets in your way. The torch near his path doesn't help. Those strange black shapes in the ruined part of town... Are those supposed to be burnt zombies?
I find it interesting that the ruined houses use tiles from the torches. Everything in town is a bit discolored compared to other Dezolis towns to show that it's been damaged. But these two houses in the back are just a bizarre and misshapen hodgepodge of tiles and black voids. If this wasn't a pirate game I'd think that some sort of tile mishap had occurred. But I think they just tried to make the houses look destroyed but didn't quite succeed.
This one isn't filtered either. I just took it to show what the inside of Dezolis shops look like. This is a tool shop. It's not bad. But that carpet is pure eyebleed and it shows up indoors practically everywhere. It's not a bad reproduction of the original pattern. Just inaccurate in terms of rotation. I'm not expecting amazing detail here. But the colors are painful and houses and shops in the original games tend to use area rugs, which helps to break up the floor design. Have I gone on about floors enough? I think so.
So I'll just add that the fireplace looks like a splatter of molten lava. Very messy. They should have just used the torch.
This is the Forest of Carnivorous Trees. It looks more like the Forest of Dearly Departed Shrubbery. Although it looks a bit lazy it does do the job of saying "you cannot pass". So I'll give it an E for effort. The original trees weren't much different in shape. They were just more nicely done. But it's an 8 bit pirate of a 16 bit game. So I won't complain. Incidentally, DO NOT go near these trees without the Eclipse Torch. You cannot run from the battle. You cannot win the battle. You just die. If you wander too close and haven't saved your game in awhile you'll be backtracking.
The Garuberk Tower from the outside. It's the same color as everything else, making it a little hard to see. The Dezolis overworld has a very limited palette. Zosa (I think?) is so tiny and background blendy that you can barely see it. I do like the shadow though. It's a nice touch.
In between Jut and Gumbious Temple. The positions of those locations are reversed in this version. The temple is south of Jut instead of being north of it. This pic was taken after defeating Dark Force 2.0 so the temple is already destroyed. I was surprised that the aftermath was actually visible on the world map.
Gumbious Temple. A slightly altered palette swap of Soldier's Temple. That flame in the back is the Eclipse Torch. I'm wondering if the priest is suffering from a palette error here. His colors just look really weird. Anyway, When you talk to him it's the old esper. Although Raja appears in the cutscene after the temple is destroyed. Unless that's the Bishop using Raja's portrait. I have no idea because I can't read Chinese.
