Hatred. Pretty stupid, eh? Sure, there's tons of
it in the world. But I could spend all day talking about hate in the world.
I think I'll generalize things. Hatred is immature. It stems from differences
that aren't communicated. It's like bottled up anger, but being slowly
released through glares, harsh words, and avoidance. And sometimes
it seems like people are friends one day, and not the next. Was it just
an overnight thing? Of course not. Negative feelings have obviously been
there for a while. And when feelings are bottled up, someone who offended
you once will offend you with everything they do. In the words of Irving
Becker, "If you don't like someone, the way he holds his spoon will make
you furious; if you do like him, he can turn his plate over into your lap
and you won't mind." And that is very true.
Here's a hypothetical situation: Tom and Huck are friends. Tom acts a certain way, and Huck hates it. Huck says nothing. Tom continues to act that way, because he doesn't know it bothers Huck. After a while, Huck hates the way Tom acts so much that Huck begins to hate Tom even when Tom isn't even acting like that. Huck stops talking to Tom. Huck is pissed off; Tom is hurt and he doesn't know what happened. It's a lose-lose situation. So once again, Hatred. Pretty stupid, eh? |
