USC Intrams 2003 kicks off
Death-defying aerial acrobatics, lovely muses, and energetic dance numbers greeted the jam-packed crowd at the University of San Carlos gymnasium in yesterday’s opening ceremony of the USC intramurals 2003.
The Rev. Roderick Salazar Jr., SVD, welcomed the Carolinians to the intramurals, which bore the theme “One Heart, Many Faces”. Fr. Salazar Jr. expressed his gratitude to those who attended. However, he also conveyed sadness over the minor attendance in yesterday’s opening of the USC Days at the Talamban campus.
The raising of college colors, which gave the gym a festive atmosphere, followed the university president’s remarks.
The most entertaining part of the program, however, was the cheering-in-dance-form competition. The participants dazzled the crowd with seemingly gravity-defying aerial shows. But while the College of Nursing may have won the competition, the College of Engineering impressed the crowd more with their antics, as they danced to novelty tunes from Parokya ni Edgar and the Sexbomb Dancers. The colleges of nursing, education, and commerce won the first, second, and third prizes, respectively.
Charming Marie Angeli Carpio of the College of Arts and Sciences was crowned Miss Intrams 2003. Ruby Sayson from the College of Nursing was adjudged first runner-up while Manjolyn Ocon, another CAS student, was awarded second runner-up award.

Monster Jam unleashed at pentagon The revelry started at around 6:30 p.m. As the hours went by, students came pouring in, unmindful of the slight drizzle. Booths were also present around the campus, ready to feed hungry Carolinians. The show did not only aim to entertain Carolinian students but to determine the best band in the university as well. The bands that competed were Daddy Divine, Redlites, Attack of the Giant Fetus, String Lordz, Time Lapse, Skunky Muggles, Prefix, The Good, the Fat, and the Ugly, 052403, and Vertigo Rush. The show also featured Cebu-based guest bands like Burning Culture and Lick. At around midnight, the show, with six bands yet to perform, was cancelled because of heavy rain. The event was sponsored by Orange Brutus, Kentucky Fried Chicken, McDonald’s, Jonie’s Flavored Chicken, Kowloon Park, Dunkin Donuts, and the USC College of Engineering. ________________________________________
Gamma downs Commerce-A, 78-67
The College of Engineering-Gamma fended off a fierce run in the second half by the College of Commerce-A, to win the opening basketball game of the University of San Carlos Intramurals 2003 yesterday, August 26 at the USC main gymnasium.
The Gamma squad jumped to an early 16-point lead after the first quarter, thanks to sweet-shooting swingman Ian Gascon, who scored 14 of his game-high 21 points in the first half. The Commerce-A squad only managed to score 11 points after the first 10 minutes of play, as opposed to 27 points for the Gamma team. Forward/slotman Kailash Sharma kept the Commerce-A dribblers in the game with 12 first half points.
The second half saw the Gamma cagers squander their lead after the Commerce-A team stepped up their defense. Turnovers also plagued Gamma, with Commerce-B capitalizing on fast breaks at the other end of the floor. An undergoal stab by Sharma gave Commerce-A their first taste of the lead since all nil, 7:15 left in the game. Gamma team skipper Paul Montecillo, however, doused the hot run by the Commerce-A players and gave the lead back to his squad at 63-65 after he scored on a layup and dished off an assist to no. 16 teammate Xar, who converted on an easy basket.
The Commerce-A team failed to regain the lead and went on to lose the game, 78-67. Sharma and Gascon topbilled for their respective teams with 21 markers apiece.
