Central library implements new security system
Would-be book thieves, beware.
The University of San Carlos Main Campus Central library recently implemented a new electronic checkpoint system or exit security system. The new system, which was acquired this semester, was specifically installed to provide better security to the library's book collection.
Before the new security system, Central Library users had to go through the tedious ordeal of standing in line and having their bags inspected by a security guard before they could leave. The process was not foolproof either, because the guard would only take a quick glance, without taking time to thoroughly inspect the contents of a bag. With the new security system, a person who has not properly checked out a book would be alerted by an alarm.
The security system is basically a "portal" that is designed to give off an alarm once a person who has not properly checked-out a book tries to exit the library. On the initial alarm, the individual is asked to step back and go through the security exit for the second time. If the alarm rings again, the person is requested to approach the circulation desk to verify if he or she is bringing out a library material, and whether the material has been checked out properly. The library security guard or a librarian would then approach the person to have his or her bag checked for the material that may have triggered the alarm.
Because the security system is relatively new, the Central Circulation Desk staff is aware that some library users who are not yet familiar with the procedure of checking out a book could inadvertently walk through the security exit and trigger the alarm. Even though this is not automatically considered an offense, a record will be kept to ensure that it would not happen for the second time. If the individual commits a second offense based on the record kept by the library, the offender would then be referred to the Director of Libraries, and then to his or her respective Dean or Chair for proper disciplinary action.
At the moment, the new security system has only been implemented in the Central Library, and cannot be found in libraries in other campuses. And if by chance the security system breaks down or there is a power failure in the Central Library, the persons leaving the library would have to go through the old tedious ordeal of falling in line and having their bags manually checked by a security guard.
