Scaling new heights with
the USC Mountaineers

by Marisar Ivy Cabatingan

Last month, the USC Mountaineers celebrated its 14th anniversary. To commemorate the event, the mountaineers set off to an anniversary climb and clean-up drive to Mt. Apo, the highest peak in the country at 2, 954 meters above sea level. A first for the organization, the “Hataw-hakot sa Mt. Apo” exclusive USC-M climb was participated by approximately 50 of its alumni members, current members, and applicants. Taking the Kapatagan terrain in Davao, the climb lasted 4 days, from Aug. 25-29. With the theme “Minimum Impact Means Environment Intact” aiming to promote the protection of the environment, the participants successfully collected more than 100 kg. of trash from the peak’s vicinity.

On Sept. 18, the USC-M, along with the College of Engineering Council, organized USCs 1st Micro-Mini Adventure Race which highlighted the TC Days 2003 5-day affair. The adventure race, was participated by twelve teams from different colleges, each team comprising of 3 individuals. The 10km distance race course entailed that the participants find control points with the use of a map on a predetermined route in different events such as land navigation, trekking, climbing, descending with rope techniques, Tyrolean traverse, obstacle course, crawling a pile of culverts, and a Makibaka run.

Team Torpedo Warriors, composed of triathletes Roni Villanueva, Clark Arche, and Anna Balagosa (team leader) bested eleven teams in the grueling 4-hour adventure race. Finishing as the first runner-up was Team Bravito with Ronald Sarabosing, Albert Nangkil, and Elaine Macasero (team leader), while Team Butterfly came in at second.

USC-M president Michael John Yu has announced that the USC-M will be hosting the 9th Mountaineering Sportsfest on February 2004. He also expressed the org’s intention to host another event, but this time an inter-collegiate race next semester.

The organization is currently affiliated with the Mountaineering Federation of the Philippines, the British Spelunking Society and British Exploration Commission, the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation, and the Haribon Foundation.

Needless to say, the USC-M has already established a name for itself, giving us Carolinians all the more reason to be proud of them and their achievements.
