SOPHIA Cup 2003 opens
Bearing the theme “One Ball, Many Hands”, the SOPHIA Cup 2003 opened at the Saint Alphonsus Collegiate Formation House Gym last Sept. 7, 2003.
This was attended by over a hundred participants, SOPHIA members, and the Philosophy department chairman, Mr. Antonio P. Diluvio.
The event started with a parade by all the teams together with their muses, and was followed by a torch lighting ceremony by Allan Amougis of the Missionaries of Our Lady of Africa. Project chairman Khirby Posas led the oath-taking ceremony.
The SOPHIA Cup is the annual sports festival of the SOPHIA Organization, the official organization of the Philosophy Department. This is the fourth SOPHIA Cup of the organization; the first one was held in August 1999, led by Ms. Leslie Cordero.
“This year’s Cup has the most participating teams,” James Prieto, one of the organizers of the first SOPHIA Cup, revealed. There are several games included in the Cup: volleyball, billiards, table tennis, and chess. Ten teams have already registered for the basketball tournament.
“There may be other games, but it’s always basketball which gets the most participants. This year, we hope to get more of our members to get involved with the other games.” Adryan Mauro, vice-president of the organization, said.
The SOPHIA Cup 2003 will run from Sept 7 to March 2004.
