ROYAL CANADIAN SEA CADET CORPS FORT LENNOX

1959 Annual Report, from L’Echo, Juin 1959

by: Midshipman David E. Parkinson and Midshipman William E. Reid

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Company of Royal Canadian Sea Cadets was organized at Feller for the first time this year.  Enrolment covered all boys from Grades VIII through X.  Grade XI Boys will participate in the fall of this year.  Total enrolment is set at 60 cadets.
Our Commanding Officer was Lieutenant S. May, R.C.S.C., a member of the Feller Staff during the 1958-59 school year.  It was due to his great interest and hard work on our behalf that we have an operating Cadet Corps at the school.
At the outset, it was decided that we should bear the name R.C.S.C.C. "Richelieu".  However, we learned from the Navy that this name had been reserved for the use of College Militaire Royal at St. Jean.  Therefore, we were renamed R.C.S.C.C. Fort Lennox , a name that is full of historical significance in this area.  Two Divisions within the Corps were given the names Bonaventure and Micmac and were placed under the leadership of Midshipman David E. Parkinson and Midshipman William E. Reid, respectively.
Before the Ship’s Warrant was officially granted and stores and uniforms were issued, the Corps was inspected on three occasions.  The Inspecting Officers were Lieutenant-Commander P.E. Buisson, R.C.N., Lieutenant G. Gosselin, R.C.N., and Mr. Charles Hutchins, Secretary of the Navy League of Canada ( Montreal ).
On the weekend of May 30-31, the Corps paraded in full dress to its namesake, "Fort Lennox".  There, the Corps staged a full-dress ceremonial parade for the Commanding Officer.
The final parade and Annual Inspection of the Corps took place on Wednesday afternoon, June 10th, before Commander George Manson, R.C.N., of R.C.S.C., Hamilton , Ont., who made a special visit to Feller for the purpose of inspecting the new Corps.
We have paraded every Wednesday evening since the beginning of the school year and have now reached a tolerable peak of efficiency.  All in all, the boys have enjoyed a very successful year and look forward to the complete Sea Cadet training program which will begin, in earnest, when school reconvenes in September.
In mid-August, our Commanding Officer will be leaving for the western provinces and the Ship will come under command of our present Supply Officer, Sub-Lieutenant Peter Ferguson, R.C.S.C.  Other officers will include Midshipmen Parkinson and Reid, and Messrs. I. Gardiner and J. Kruse, Civilian Instructors.
