Chapter 3
BRRRRRRRRRIINNGG! My alarm clock went off at 5:45 A.M. I rolled over and shut it off. Another school day. Sigh. I dragged myself out of bed and walked into my closet, so tired I almost smacked my face into the closet door. I picked out my clothes, took a shower, got dressed, and ran downstairs into the kitchen. "Morning," said mom. "Morning," I answered. I ate my breakfast and got my books together. "You ready?" Josh asked me. I nodded. We headed out the door and down th street, where we met up with Logan and Emily. While walking to school we saw Marco with Brett, who's just a little older than Hannie. "Hi, Brett," we said. "Hi," he answered kind of shyly. We said "Hi" to Marco, too, and he asked us how are parents were. We talked for awhile and then realized we were going to be late for school. We ran the rest of the way. We were late for homeroom and got detention. Me, Josh, Emily, and Logan. After school. Total bummer. The day seemed to be never ending. When we were released from detention (finally) we walked over to Logan and Emily's house. Uncle Jake let us in. "Hi, kids. What are you doing home so late?" he asked us. "Umm...we kinda got detention," Emily said slowly. "Oh? Why?" Uncle Jake questioned. "We were late for school," Logan answered. "Only by, like, two minutes," he added. Uncle Jake nodded. "Just don't let it happen again. By the way, your mom's out with your Aunt Rachel and Hannie," he said to his kids. They nodded and Josh and I exchanged a look. We knew what that meant. Mom dragged Aunt Cassie and Hannie to the mall. And she'll come home with about fourty shopping bags. She's a total shop-aholic. "Why don't you kids go upstairs and do a little of your homework?" Uncle Jake suggested. We nodded and headed upstairs. Josh and Logan went into Logan's room, and Emily and I went into Emily's room. We swung our backpacks onto the ground and unzipped them, flinging our books on the floor. From the room next to us, we could hear music go on full blast. We looked at eachother and rolled our eyes. Josh and Logan definitely were not doing their homework. "Have a lot of homework?" Emily asked me. I made a face. "Math, French, History, and Science. You?" I answered. She shrugged. "Italian, Geography, and math," she replied. "Blah," she added as an after-thought. I laughed. In about an hour, we finished most of it. That's when Uncle Jake yelled up to us,"Josh? Kathy? Your dad just called. He wants you home in a few minutes!" "Okay!" we yelled back. "Hey Dad, can we walk with them?" Emily asked. "Well...alright. Your mother should be over there soon. Sure, go ahead," he answered. She smiled at me. I smiled back and said, "Maybe you can stay for supper or something," She shrugged, "That'll be cool. If it's okay with everyone, of course." I nodded and gathered my books together. We knocked on the boys's door. "C'mon guys, we gotta go," I called. They came out. "Did you finish your homework?" Emily asked them. We knew they didn't. "Maybe we did, maybe we didn't," Josh replied. "Yeah, what's it to you?" Logan chimed in. They high-fived eachother. Emily and I exchanged glances. Sometimes they act like such morons. We started out the door, calling our 'good-byes' to Uncle Jake. It was starting to get kinda dark out already. "Hey, let's go through the short-cut!" Logan exclaimed suddenly. "Yeah, good idea!" Josh agreed. "What short-cut?" I wondered. "The one through that old construction site," Josh answered, pointing further down the road. "I don't know..." Emily started. "Oh, c'mon, Em. Are you scared?" Logan said, making his voice sound like a baby. I saw Emily make a face at him behind his back and I laughed. So, we headed through towards the construction site.
