Chapter 8

(written by Lacy)

"That'll be $38.00," the cab driver said. Jade handed him the money and climbed out of the cab behind Jess. "Oh-my-God," Jess whispered as she craned her neck to look up at the gigantic houses all around her. "They gave us the best one they could find under a million dollars," Jade said as the last of the luggage was piled onto the driveway and the cab pulled away. "This one is ours," she said, pointing to a beautiful condo sitting at the end of the driveway they were standing on. "Shall we go in?" Jade continued, grabbing as many suitcases as she could carry and walking up to the front door. "Uh-huh," Jess muttered, picking up one of her suitcases and following her best friend. Jade placed the key into the lock and turned the handle with exagerated slowness. "And behind door number one is..." Jade said in an announcer's voice. "Heaven," she continued breathlessly as the door swung open with ease and they were met with an airy hallway painted in a light blue shade. "Okay, alright," Jade said. "We're never leaving."

"I think I'll agree to that," Jess said. "Just as long as they move Eric Lindros down here, too." Jade laughed, happy that Jess was in a better mood and finally acting like herself again. "Race ya out back!" Jade said, running through the house and out the sliding glass door that lead from the den to the cement patio. "No fair, you got a head start!" Jess yelled as she reached the patio to find Jade standing with her back to her. "Jade? Are you okay?" Jess asked when Jade didn't say anything. "Yeah, I'm great," Jade said, still staring out towards the backyard. "What--" Jess started, but stopped when she saw what had caught Jade's attention. Extending out past their backyard was a gorgeous lake surrounded by gardens of flowers and more condos with boats attached to docks. They even their own dock--and a boat was tied to it.

"Jade?" Jess asked, looking over at her. "I can't believe he did this," was all Jade said in reply. "Who did what?" Jess asked, getting more confused by the minute. "Josh," Jade replied, as if Jess would understand what she was talking about. "Josh? Your secretary?" Jess asked, getting more confused by the second. "I told him how much I loved boats. I can't believe he got us one," Jade said, still mesmorized by the quaint little speed boat bobbing in front of them. "Oh," Jess said, finally understanding. "Jade, what are you doing now?" Jess asked as Jade walked past where the boat was tied and stopped at the end of the dock.

Jade was always doing crazy stuff without warning, it was just the way she was; unpredictable. Jade answered Jess' question by throwing her long blonde hair back into a quick pony tail and jumping head first into the deep blue lake water. "Why does that not surprise me?" Jess muttered to herself as Jade's head surfaced the water and she hoisted herself back onto the dock. "Refreshing," Jade said as she walked past Jess, sopping wet, and into house.
