"The War Correspondent" or "Topic of the Day" march by "Marie Louka"
"Marie Louka" is a pseudonym referring to Marie Louise Kaekel, whom Schmid married in 1901.
The manuscript is undated. Under its "Marie Louka" pseudonym, ASCAP is mentioned. Schmid was elected
to ASCAP in 1936. Johann C. Schmid's grandson Lewis J. Thomas Jr., who scanned the manuscript, guessed
that it was written in 1941. But the cheerful tones of "The War Correspondent" contrast with the somber
tones of the 1940 "Marie Louka" song about WWII "Flowers From the Dust." What cheerful news about
WWII existed in 1941? I would guess that "The War Correspondent" manuscript was written in 1945, when
reports of a collapsing Nazi regime were cheering the way toward Victory in Europe Day (1945-05-08).
