Canopic jars
Jars like these seen below were used to protect the organs of the dead
pharaoh. They were clay jars with the heads of different gods for
lids. The organs were dried using natron salt and then sealed within the
jars. A specific god was assigned each organ. These organs
were the liver, the stomach, the intestines, and the kidneys. The
heart was left inside the mummy because it was thought to be the essence
of the person.
