Why Death? Ever since read The Sandman series, I have felt a new kinship to the character Death. As a depressed teenager, I (of course) had a relationship with death--a knight in shining armour relationship, you might say. But my evolved relationship with Death is one of self-knowledge. I know myself better now, and I find Death inside of myself rather than an external longing. Death is part of me. Since I was a child, I have had difficulty in accepting the changes in my life (mainly, my father's death at my age of 11 and my following reluctance to accept adulthood/teenage-hood) Gaiman's Death is like a zen master example of someone who understands and accepts change. So, when I experienced Death personified in The Sandman as a sensible woman (endless?) who accepts her responsibilities, cares deeply for the people she encounters and does not allow darkness to engulf her, I found what I envision my ultimate self to be.
