A Dose of Reelality - My Views and Ramblings on the year 2000 in movies

(I figured I should get this posted before the Oscar nominations came out tomorrow, so at least I can get my 2 cents worth in.  I’m working on a deeper analysis which I will post at a later date)

It was the beginning of a new decade, and arguably the beginning of a new century and millennium.  The promise for hope sprung eternal in every aspect of life.  For my purposes, the promise that Hollywood would take note of past successes and failures and subsequently learn something.  Alas, I was to be disappointed again.  By years end, the trail taken through the calendar heeded little to be proud of, or to hold above any other.  There were disturbing trends that continued, such as films with a big budget, and low intelligence, the use of cute kids (mostly with Bruce Willis), and worst of all, copycats and sequels of past successes that failed miserably.  But through it all, there were some shining moments.  Animation took new strides forward, with Disney, and Nick Park showing that genre’s bright future, while a few films showed that a script really does matter.  Without further adieu, my dose of reel-ality, a look at 2K in retrospect.

It wasn’t as bad a year as most would like to say, but it definitely wasn’t as good as it could have been.  There was great potential for both blockbusters, and indie masterpieces, the groundwork had been laid, but the money hungry power mongers in the film making world took over, and lay waste to what should have been a landmark year in films.  Here’s to hoping that Arthur Clarke and Stanley Kubrick’s prophesizing is true, and that 2001 is indeed an odyssey.
