A Monsterous Mess
I haven't yet gotten around to writing a formal review on this movie yet, because I was so thoroughly turned off by it. My friends told me, "just write that it sucked..that is the truth isnt it?" and I did think about doing that, but I said "Nah, I have to say WHY it sucked". Basically, I went into with low expectations. I wanted a typical, formulaic disaster movie..meaning, very little plot, lotsa monster and disaster. Give me enough of a plot to make some semblance of sense, just to hold the movie together between monster scenes. Give me good effects, eye candy, something to look at, since this is the reason we came..to see the monster/disaster. Finally, give me some quippy, sharp, humorous one-liners, or inside jokes, to show that this movie doesn't take itself too seriously..and knows when to have fun, when to have plot, and when step aside and let the star come out. This movie acheives the effects, Godzilla looks neat (kind of like Jurassic Park goes to the Big Apple), but there's not enough. In a 2:27 movie, I expect to see more than just an hour of monsters. Too much plot time!!..I say again, dance with the one that brung ya!
The only effective cast members were Jean Reno (still searching for a good cup o coffee) and an underused Hank Azaria (Birdcage, and Mr Helen Hunt).
The rest is just filler. The humor is few and far between (the spoof is beaten into the ground)..and the movie just drags on..and on..and on..like a sadistic Energizer bunny. So even by the low disaster movie standards that I set for Godzilla..it fails..badly. Wait for cable, and only if they are showing a Pauly Shore film festival in that instance
