Against All Odds

Chapter Six

Katy shaded her eyes with her hand against the sun. She watched as the tiny white ball disappeared into an abyss. She never really liked golf but her dad found some great excitement in it, so she knew the basics of playing.

Kevin seemingly enjoyed the game too, as he and Jack were playing this morning. Katy was asked to tag along and she obliged to even join them in playing under the one condition that they let her drive the golf cart.

Brandy came back from her morning jog and unlike most days, AJ was not there. She felt hurt and relieved at the same time. Hurt because she thought of how bad she must have burnt his ego. She felt relief because she was spared the embarrassment of facing him yet.

She breathed heavily as she plopped down on the porch to stretch her tired legs. She absent-mindedly looked around for AJ, thinking that maybe he had just slept in this morning. Once she was done she went into the house.

Ella stood in the kitchen making French toast. “Mom, where is everyone?” “Heather’s still in bed, and Katy and Kevin went with your father to the country club to play golf. As for AJ he left early this morning, even before you got up. He didn’t say where he was going he just walked out. He was limping a little though. So anyway, I made our favorite, French toast. You know how your father hates it.”

Brandy smiled childishly at her mom. She loved French toast and her mom only made it when they were the only ones eating because no one else really cared for it.

Although AJ’s absence bothered her to begin with she decided it would be best to simply put it behind her. A simple girl and a big time star weren’t the best mix. It just wasn’t meant to be. She had to accept that.

“Heather,” Ella called from the bedroom doorway. “Gracious child, it’s nearly noon. You can’t sleep all day, now get up.” Heather moaned and rolled over. “Gimmie a minute or two Mom,” she replied grumpily.

Her mother brushed her behavior as her not feeling well and left her to herself at her request.

Once Ella shut the door Heather jumped out of bed and slipped on some pajama bottoms. She rushed put the door and down the hallway. Easing the door open she called softly, “Brian.” He looked towards her and gave a crooked smile.

Heather leaped onto the bed and nuzzled close to Brian. He planted a kiss on her nose, and her mouth, moving to her cheek, then her neck.

“I could devour you,” he whispered into her ear. “All of you. Every last ounce of your tiny little body.”

Ever since the day that they had arrived at the Davidson’s, Brian felt drawn to Heather. Her tiny disposition, along with her attractive southern drawl made her seem so innocent to him. She kind of confused his to begin with. She seemed to quiet and reserved, helpless, almost seeming inferior to all that surrounded her. Then he caught her look. A look of a butterfly stuck in her cocoon. Once her offered his hand to help her out she spread her wings for him.

They had shared their secrets, their inner most thoughts, their laughter, and most importantly, their love. He brought things out of her that she didn’t even know existed. Their days were spent sneaking little touches and flirting when no one was looking, and sometime when someone was. Their nights were filled with loved, keeping a nice balance on reality and fantasy, both of them very content.

They didn’t tell anyone about their little secret getaways because, most importantly, it was something that might cause a stifle among his group mates. But in all honesty, they just liked the excitement of sneaking away together, without anyone knowing about it.

Ella and Brandy folded the last of the laundry when Heather came downstairs. “We’re hungry Mom. We thought we’d go get something to eat,” Heather explained, kissing her mother goodbye.

After they left Ella told Brandy that she needed to run some errands, for her to stay behind and wait for AJ. She didn’t want him to come home to an empty house. Of course she figured this would suit her daughter just fine.

Brandy honestly hated the thought of facing the music but she didn’t argue with her mother, for fear of stirring up her suspicions.

Brandy was suddenly awakened from her relaxing sleep on the sofa by the patio door sliding open. She sat up and looked over the back of the couch, into the kitchen. She saw AJ shut the door. I must look like hell, she though humorously to herself. She lay back down and tried to fake sleep.

“Brandy,” he whispered softly. “Hmm,” she grumbled. He came and stood over her. “I want to talk to you,” he told her. He took her hand and helped her to her feet.

“I want you to know how sorry I am for treating you the way that I did.” “No, AJ, I’m sorry… I… I just…” He kissed both her hands and then kissed her softly on the mouth. He motioned for her to follow him.

They walked out onto the patio and then out through the yard. He led her out through the empty land behind the house. So far out that her house was no longer visible. The wild flowers were waist high this far out. It was just rugged land.

He turned to face her. The sun was beginning to set and it was a very becoming shade of orange-red. He kissed her hand before pulling her down next to him on the ground, in the midst of a ton of various types of colorful, fragrant wild flowers. He wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her closer to him. He rested his chin on the curve of her neck.

She enjoyed this more than any of her petty words could express, so she said nothing at all. She just laid back and took it all in.

Just as the sun seemed to bury itself into the horizon he kissed her ear lightly. “I’m falling in love with you, Brandy Davidson.”
