Living The Rock-N-Roll Spirit With The Chosen Few

THE CHOSEN FEW probably do not ring a bell with most Generation X punk rockers(or whatever you call them). Asides from the fact that THE CHOSEN FEW hailed from Victoria, Australia, they were rocking out the bottom of the globe in the mid seventies (1976-1979). Because they were unfamiliar with the British punk invasion, THE CHOSEN FEW resembled a bunch of drunken biker slobs. They would have cringed at the early U.K. punk clone-trons.

THE CHOSEN FEW had a history of numerous name changes in band direction and/or personel. DEATHWISH was the initial band name until they switched names again to THE INSTIGATORS. Eventually, they penned the name THE CHOSEN FEW, while abridging their name to THE FEW at one point.

As previously mentioned, THE CHOSEN FEW was not raised on the staples of mohawks, spiked bracelets, etc. Instead, their main influences included the sixties Detroit rock scene, THE STOOGES, MC5, THE AMBOY DUKES, while also nodding their heads toward BLUE CHEER, and even taking a liking towards bands on the NUGGETS compilation series. So the question remains, what does this band sound like (if you must insist upon comparisons)?

My guess is that the CHOSEN FEW ended up resembling THE RAMONES, maybe even THE DAMNED, as they basically played extremely fast rock-n-roll. That's right, THE CHOSEN FEW lived the spirit of rock-n-roll, even though their sound ACCIDENTLY had punk written all over it.

Of course, most live observers of THE CHOSEN FEW were not ready to experience this sort of music. Audiences were screaming for cover songs of their favorite seventies artists, while THE FEW were kicking out the jams with their own original tunage and adding a little spice with MC5 and STOOGES covers.

The CHOSEN FEW's concept of life was having lots of fun with no barrs held. As a result, they created songs like "New Race," "The Joke Is On Us," and "Adolph, You Beauty." The ex-hippies gone capitalists must have freaked out at this sort of subject matter.

Eventually, THE CHOSEN FEW had finally turned their ears towards possibly the best punk band ever, THE SAINTS. THE FEW were so overwhelmed by these fellow Australian lads, that they covered "Demolition Girl" at an extreme breakneck speed. Radio Birdland was another significant encounter, as the CHOSEN FEW gigged with another extremely talented Australian band.

Breaking up was inevitable for THE FEW because not only were they unrecognized, but numerous personel changes had ended up taking a toll on the band (including a brief attempt at recording some songs in the early 1990's). As a result, THE CHOSEN FEW did not receive the recognition that was well deserved. They were way too unfocused upon themselves during their unforgivably short stint.
