AH YES, THE WIPERS! The bastard children of the blank generation.
Way after punk rock rock went belly up, THE WIPERS defied conventional wisdom with their sonic vibrations. Not needing to follow the anti-fashion code incorporated by THE PISTOLS, GERMS, or even the mohican topped EXPLOITED, these Portland, Oregonian's threads ending up resembling the looks of THE KNACK, while sonically nodding towards a punker version of SYD BARRETT.
So what is this shit known to you and me as THE WIPERS. Well, these awefully attired, yet musical gods were mostly eyeballed by 1980's/1990's college radio deejay geekoids. GREG SAGE'S revolving door of bandmates has unfortunently never moved beyond the land located left of the f.m. radio dial. Consequently, only slightly more than a handful of people really know who THE WIPERS really are... or I may be stretching things a bit, since I am too damn lazy to get off my butt and administer a marketing survey on this mostly trivial subject matter. Hardly any soul has even attempted to etch any wordage about this outfit. The exceptions are a few words in The Nineteen Eighties Version Of The Trouser Press Record Guide, while GREG SAGE'S abreviated liner notes briefly touch upon events in the sort of recently issued box set, simply called Box Set.
Box Set features THE WIPERS initial three albums, Is It Real, Youth Of America, and Over The Edge, while bonus material is tossed in for the record collector scum to eat up. Is It Real, THE WIPERS freshman outing is a masterpiece. This formula is short, breif, concise, and most importantly, effective. Youth Of America avengefully shatters the sacred "punk rock bible," with two songs that competes with the GRATEFUL DEAD for the lack of brevity, but kicks Jerry Garcia and company's collective ass in high sonic velocity. Over The Edge takes a cue from THE SAINTS Eternally Yours album. An unpopular formula amongst the punk elite, THE WIPERS exhibits a brass section. Fortunately, the horn tootage does not head into the TONY BENNET league, which would comprimise the sonically pulsating guitar effects.
Shell out your hard earned rock and roll dollars, and bullishly invest your way into this useless hobby. THE WIPERS Box Set helps you on your journey to "collector scum completism."
