DAMAGE AND LEAFS GO DOWN TO THE WIRE

7/15/99
In a classic duel that featured two hat tricks and
some second period heroics, Kansas City outlasted
Hiawatha 6-5 to win the 1999 Snacker Cup this past
Sunday. Devin Dollar and Brian Finch played the
critical roles for KC. Finch had a hat trick and the
game-winner. Dollar had two important goals late in
the final period. His first goal tied the game, and
the second gave Kansas City its first lead with only
three minutes left. Don McKinnis assisted on both of
Dollar's goals.

KC appeared to be in serious trouble when Hiawatha's
Phillip Ingram scored with 13:08 left in the final
period. The goal gave Hiawatha a commanding 4-2 lead,
but KC kept the shots coming, outshooting Hiawatha
15-5 in the second period.

Steve McMahon cut the lead to one with a goal at the
10:45 mark. Then Dollar added his two goals to give
KC a 5-4 lead with three minutes left. Forty
seconds later Finch scored his third to make it
6-4. The goal would turn out to be the game-winner.
Damage appeared to be in control, but KC's McKinnis
got called for elbowing with 1:05 left in the game.
Skating with an empty net and a 5-3 advantage,
Hiawatha converted when Ingram scored his third goal
of the game with 15 seconds left off an assist from
Charlie Stinson. The goal helped make for a dramatic
ending, but KC survived as the Leafs only got off
one shot in the final seconds.
