So we’re talking about servitors, as well as other kinds of thought-forms, and I’m asking what connections there are between the person and the thought-form, and so what if there are. What are the implications? I think there are two major directions or implications a magickal thought-form has on reality. The thought-form or servitor acts externally to the mage by acting on the world, and the other implication is that the thought-form acts on the inner, on the mage’s body/mind. External effects: I think many would agree that some servitors are left alone or are banished by the mage to the ideosphere or aether (enter your own ontological construct here ___) perhaps never to be seen or heard of again. But where do they go. Do they die? I think not. Ever ask yourself this question, that if my servitor feeds off “other” (outside) sources of energy, where do they go to live when I’m not paying attention to them? Off your energy, perhaps? Or your mama’s? Off some poor shmuck over here, or that group of people over there? Energy comes from somewhere, and it ain’t cool to just create a mess and banish it when convenient. I define ‘creating a mess’ as a servitor or even some other kinds of harmful thought-forms that have not been reintegrated into the mage, or such as when they become free from the mind of the mage, either by neglect or will or death, etc and those forms then take on a life of their own and go looking for ‘other’ similar sources of energy, or behavior on their own. If the servitor is too maniacal or too much of a pain for the mage to deal with and is left to the winds (is banished into the ideosphere) that’s when others might pay a price. - yeah yeah, not my creations you’re saying, just the same, consider carefully where they’ll take their energy from. Because now the thought-form, and particularly a servitor, has become a new and uniquely individual force in the universe. Trivialize this or not, that newly created force has effects on the universe whether those effects are powerful or not. A definite effect(S) is produced on the universe and on the mage, and those effects are negative or positive depending on the mage’s input. And if servitors can mutate, as ZW says, the effects on external reality are even less predictable. Obviously not all servitors and thought-forms are harmful, that’s one of my points, it depends on their function, their intention, their general direction over time, what forces and energies will interact with them, what their ‘character’ is, what their energy sources are, and many other factors. And be equally aware that some beings will be able to tell what’s happening if it affects them or their turf, and will fight back. I know I sure as fuck do. (Or as Zen put it, combative ‘magick.’ At least that’s how I interpret it.) The next turf struggle is over our biosphere (if you can believe the stupidity of that struggle), so if humans lose this struggle, humans lose their lives. simple Internal effects on the mage: And there’s always the effect that the ‘burning’ of the thought-form or servitor into ones body/mind has on the person. Choose wisely, fellow psycho-psyches. Crazily if you dare, but only if it doesn’t fuck with others, or the planet we walk on. Magickal thought-forms have a huge impact on ones mind (body/mind) and have long-term effects, and not just on ones memories, but on ones body/mind (see earlier posts under ‘servitor’), so buyer beware. It’s sort of like going on a psyche-dissecting two-day mushroom trip. It’s not recommended that one eat massive amounts of psyllicibn on some downtown street corner and just ‘hope’ things work out. Much better is to be out in the country somewhere, with a plan, jackets, lots of water, food, safe from cops and weirdos, you get the idea: prepared. It’s like experimenting with Kundalini without knowledge, or without the siddha effect guiding-- it’s never a good idea to screw around with nuclear energy without an experienced teacher, or you certainly might end up doing something unintended. Ha Magickal thought-forms require planning. Servitors to my mind always seemed to cry out for special care, even though any thought-form affects the universe as well as the body/mind, such as sigils, mantras, etc. I don’t know why, but I speculate it has something to do with the fact that subconsciously, we humans (or least I know I do) tend to recognize consciousness in the eyes of ‘another’ (in this case, of the servitor). Through the eyes a soul can be read. If I tend to subconsciously recognize ‘someone else’ in the created servitor I start to impart wonder and independent life and this is where problems can arise because of the factor of independence. It may deviate or start to do its own thing. A humanoid creation is much more likely to be subconsciously thought to be another separate individual than some glyph or sigil etc. Perhaps even unconsciously, fears and hopes can get focused by the mage’s body/mind into the servitor. (not as much with a glyph or mantra) Now the servitor has it’s own life, it truly is separated from the mage because the mage has separated it from herself and given it life, a life seen through a new pair of eyes. And now it’s a force in the universe. It’d better be well- thought out, chaos technique-created or not, ‘cuz it will affect things for better or worse. Where do these external and internal implications leave us? We all know that there is no ‘ultimate of ultimate’ moral system to live by to help one to decide one way or the other what the ‘good’ is, or what the best course of action is. (cf. Wittgenstein’s ‘Lecture on Ethics’). Sure there’s the rule of three, and the ‘do unto others (or was that lovers?) as you want them to do you’ (one I personally favor) and other general guidelines (never drink cheap beer except when you need to….arrrrgghh). But I’ve seemed to notice a law of ‘what goes around, comes around, or put another way, ‘if you shit in your living environs, you’re not going to be smiling for long.’ Now obviously this is no “moral” law, but I don’t think many will argue against it. The point is that even in ‘ordinary magick,’ even in ‘magic,’ and even in holding ordinary thought-forms in normal waking consciousness, our thought-forms endure beyond us in ways that sometimes have unintended consequences. They affect us later in life. They remain a part of our dreams, they are certainly a part of us when we die, and they help to shape who we are when we are in the physical body or not. Thought-forms are part of our very makeup. I don’t think it’s too much to say that the ending and dissolution of thought-forms and servitors needs to be planned ahead, how the thought-form will end, and under what conditions. For example, if some kind of wild-eyed servitor, or even if some entity is conjured, there must be a plan for saying goodbye to it. And hopefully for all us other entities ‘out there,’ servitors are not just dumped back into the ideosphere (wht the fuCk) but are reintegrated back into the self (for maximum power gain for the mage) if at all possible, if not they’re not destroyed or turned off. I know buds ZW and Wraith and some others create some bizarreness out there, but I think in general, most goals can be accomplished by much less intrusive means. Sigils, spells, tantra, name a technology, most can do the job and be “consciousness-friendly.” By “consciousness-friendly,” I mean thought-patterns that are highly defined, non-humanoid creations that target the desire specifically, do the job, then disintegrate when done, or better, and assuming you’ve chosen wisely, ie, you’ve chosen a truly positive creation, then the pattern can be reabsorbed back into the mage for additional strength. By reabsorbing the positive thought-pattern or servitor, powers are increased many times in the body/mind of the mage because the energies of the thought-form are reintegrated back into the mage’s psyche and soul, but after first being transformed. So one can see how critical it is to create a positive thought-form if one is serious about increasing ones power and health. (karma) These days, because of all the incredible amounts of crap that are already ‘out’ in the world right now, IMHO the less bullshit we put into our individual and collective consciousness, the better. That’s why I stay away from servitors. To me, anything created with eyes and a humanoid form is creepy. (I think of servitors as having a humanoid shape and eyes, but this may not always be the case) Man, I tell you, I am crazy enough, without having to stare into the sparkling eyes of some psychotic entity. Why would I need to? Not only could they affect someone else (you?) down the road, but they’re basically a split off piece of the psyche that, I think, represents a part of the person that needs looking after (say, perhaps with a tourniquet?). No offense to you who create servitors, ‘cuz this also applies to myself in other ways, but if we’re desiring to create potentially independent creatures in a more or less blind manner, without specifying parameters, and we create blind creatures/servitors without dismantling or reintegrating them, we’re in for some shit. (What goes around, comes around) And the converse is also true, if I create some highly intelligent and aware thought-form that is constantly looking to produce something positive, I get that result. It’s the unintended consequences that one must try to be conscious of before choosing a Working. A huge vortex of energy can be opened up, with or without some entity like a servitor that I feel I’ve got to keep an eye on. It’s my opinion that all thought-forms should be reintegrated, or destroyed or dismantled. I just don’t like the idea of creating a servitor, then booting it out into the world, for others to stumble across. It also leaves the separated piece of the mage’s psyche in a split-off or non-integrated condition. The mage is less powerful if s/he’s leaving parts of her split-off soul ‘lying around,’ like unfinished business. I’ve had way too startling experiences with other entities who are already here (Shiva and others) to desire to create my own entities (with eyes). I visit with Shiva and other gods and goddesses like I do friends. But I can relate to most any other form of Work aside from using servitors ‘cuz almost any desire or purpose that I’d want can be handled with the other technologies. Thought-forms and servitors properly charged can do a lot more than “think.” But again, to do what they do, they ‘interlock’ with one’s mind; they get imprinted onto one’s nervous system. That’s how they get built in the first place, with super-charged or focused concentration. So, like a tattoo, I hope you really truly like what you’re getting (and that it doesn’t mess with others) ‘cuz it does get burned into your mind. So when Wraith recommends laying out the parameters, I’d recommend that people consider all possibilities of external and internal effects mentioned above. .Midgardr and others, you may want to check out the archives under ‘servitor’ if you missed Wraith’s down & dirty method for creating a servitor a little while back. And forgive the appearance of being flippant, but people may want to remind themselves that just ‘cuz the method is short and it leaves a lot up to the mage, that doesn’t mean you have to act without using your brain to the best of your abilities. This may be the most important part of the Work. JR just told me that s/he seconds the notion and recommends adding a “sunset clause” into the parameters-- so that once a task has been completed, the servitor no longer exists. It is easy to simply assume that what a person does in a magical context for hir own benefit does not spread out into the lives of others, but that is simply not the case. I, for one, happen to have a fairly strong background in "wiccan theory" as regards the karmic cycle, and, because of this, I tend to focus on "good" servitors when I construct them. I don't expect everyone out there to do so, and I think we can all agree that somebody at some point has made themselves a sevitor devoted to lust. lets use this as an example. you want to get laid. you want to get laid a whole lot. so you spawn off your lust into an entity to go out an hook you up. whats the problem here? first, spawing off your lust thereby reduces the desire for sex, but now you got a spiritual entity trying to get you laid. so, when it does happen, you don't enjoy it. in fact, you become a little antagonistic about it, and your antagonism develops into destructive behavior. (sex w/out caring about sex... talk about masturbation) this is a prime example of creating a stupid servitor... you should have stuck with a sigil, or a candle spell or something simple. instead, you've just infiltrated the ideosphere with another useless and weak servitor, and you've lost a bit of what makes you human. as for what the servitor lives off of when it ain't feeding off you, or you ain't feeding it, this is another area which should be addressed. I happen to like hijacking commercialization, or media events, to use as servitors. (movies make a good time-frame servitor energy force) say you want to do something like challenge conservatism on your school campus with a servitor. (this is an old example, new movies are coming out all the time, use them) you link your servitor to the movie Rushmore, and define it as feeding off the emotional energy generated by movie go-ers who see this movie in the theatre. During the theatrical run, the servitor is up and running, then, after the movie leaves the theatres, it comes back and splices itself back into your psyche. other mages (more astrologically inclined than myself) can link a servitor to a specific planet, and, while that planet is up influincing us, the servitor is online. This seems like a good, all round timeframe, especially if the 'sphere' in which the servitor functions is connected to the 'sphere' of influence the planet represents. however, I have (and I'm proud of this fact) created a servitor who is currently feeding off of sporting events and transmuting the energy into free-floating literary energy. Hopefully this servitor will be around for a long long time. (I really dislike sports, & I love books. what can I say? I'm a poet) Notice, I don't actually target individuals, but rather, the emotional energy given off by a large group of people. As for mutation, servitors generally mutate into the most powerful and potentially usefull form to fulfill their statement of intent, which is why a clearly defined (try e-prime) statement is crucial. It’s certainly not the case that the whole of the law is “Do what thou will.” This over-simplified and unquestioned truism misses the mark because it doesn’t allow for such critical features of reality as the importance of true chaos to enter into ones reality, that unknowable chaos that unexpectedly creates a superior thought-pattern or work of art in the mind of the mage. The chaos factor makes life interesting because there is friction to the operation of our will: our wills do not predict each and every thought, let alone each and every aspect and detail of reality. If our wills did so, I think the experience of the person would soon enough turn into stark raving psychosis, because there would never be any rest. Even just closing ones eyes or dreaming would have horrible consequences. Bottom line, if will was the only component to life, we’d be fucked. Put another way, it’s unlikely we’d be humans who live on earth. We’d be something else. So humans, qua humans, need to “not know” what’s coming up at times, if only to experience “something new.” One of the most unforgettable experiences of my life was one of my many hundreds of experiences with psyllicibin mushrooms. I was 19, frying heavily, and opening my sliding glass door from my room to the outside when I looked at the ground just before I stepped outside. I was stunned. I saw all the leaves and debris that was on the ground in perfectly symmetrical snowflake patterns. Yet intellectually I “knew” (or thought that I’d known) that the leaves and stuff on the ground was really in a random and scattered state across the asphalt. There was no way anyone could will such beauty. So I decided to do a little experiment. I took my right foot and scattered the snowflake patterns in front of me, and amazingly enough, the leaves scattered for a millisecond, then instantly reformed into perfect snowflake patterns again, only this time they were different patterns, but equally beautiful and shocking. So I took my foot and did it again, same result! And again. And again. Each snowflake pattern was more or equally amazing and beautiful than the previous pattern. This was/is some sort of reality-organizing intelligence at work, obviously separate from the will, to be so detailed and alive. From this experience many desires came out of the experience. So our desires can come to us in strange and important ways, but not necessarily through the will, rather, chaotically. And this is a good. Creativity requires will to carry out its desires. But encountering ones desires requires chaos and serendipity (Shakti) because desires precede the will. And studying ones desires can change them (can change ones opinion of them and their validity). Not only does the desire affect internal and external reality of the mage, the interaction between the desire and reality affects the mage, and consequently affects her future desires. (the self-referring feedback loop of human desire and action) I would argue that our greatest visions and thoughts derive from spontaneity, not will. When I’m improvising percussion, I can’t even wait for the will to occur, so to speak—by the time I think the thought and will it, it’s too late, the moment has already passed. So I play in an alert state of mind that is ‘receptive’ or somehow open to whatever comes into the mind (desires translated into musical form). Basically, the book is geared towards wiccan style rituals (and, me being what I am, I don't do rituals) but it has a tonne of info on how to visualize animal spirits, the various abilities and traits of animal spirits, and other bits & pieces. I myself have the ability to wolf-out in the astral (hence thee name) but I can also go Tiger, or Hyena, coyote, squirrel, and, most recently, dragon. 'Educate, Empower and Subvert' When delving into the archetypes of myth, the reoccurrence of similar personality types, as well as the similarities of plot lines indicate two things. Events seem to repeat themselves, and people have an intuitive sense of good and evil. Today we see the murders of gods and the stealing of magical talismans become metaphors for societal change, and understand myth as a structure within which social mores are presented. The death of Baldur, engineered by Loki, is equivalent to the death of innocence trhough the mechanics of cruelty. It is a lesson, a warning, a fable, and, due to its entertainment value, it has a built-in repetitive value. The trickster, who re-appears time after time throughout the myths of various cultures, defines the role of fate and the ideal of change. Without this archetype, the world would remain in a stasis. There would be no great deed without a prodding, some geas, or an injunction of some sort. Rather, there would only be the static, non-changing, non-evolving reality of a million years of hunting and gathering. True, the techniques of hunting and gathering would be greatly streamlined and well defined given a millennium, but there would be nothing else. Instead, because of war, we have increased our knowledge of peace, how to maintain peace, how to accomplish cross-cultural ambassadorial missions. Because of disease, we have developed medical techniques. Without these catastrophes, we would still be crouched in firelight, staring into the darkness beyond the cave, fearing the shadows. No scientific study would be where it is today without the heretical tricksters, who poked and prodded at the various assumptions and poked holes in theories, who created hoaxes and sparked debates over research methods, and who stole fire from the heavens and brought it to earth. Before the dawn of time and history, we have legends of a great civilization and the archeological data of primitive tribes. What is the truth? Both. The first men were a great civilization. They were the ones who decoded the stars, for they had no other lights to hold back the night. They knew the plant life and animal life better by the time they could walk than most civilized people know at age eighty. They could survive in barren deserts, Arctic wastes, and deep jungles better than an American today could survive in a temperate forest teeming with wildlife. Thus they were, in their own right, a great civilization. The ancients knew that a tone corresponded with a color, and a vibration could retain remanence across great distances, and they learned this through the technique of patient observation, facts that we've proven today through application of arcane technologies. They interpreted their knowledge through a terminology born of religion, magic, and superstition, while today we interpret it in terms of science, politics, and psychology. Ironically, when we refer to the primitive cultures, we refer to a cultural existence more harmonious with nature and more artistic in symbolism than our own. Masks of a shamanic ritual still hold the power to impress, to shock, to inspire that they had when they were first constructed. This is a technology of psychology in and of itself. The faces on Easter Island, the monoliths of Britain and the Netherlands, the sand paintings of Tibetan and Amerindian culture, the Cave of Dreamtime and the hieroglyph of Egypt, the caverns of South America and the calendars of the Mayans and the Hopi all speak of an artistic and architectural integrity of these primitive cultures. The levitation of objects with projected sound waves, observed in Tibet, can hardly be repeated by modern science except under very specialized conditions, and then only with millions of dollars worth of equipment. The discoveries of ancient clay urns which could generate electrical currents and the mummification techniques of ancient Egypt, the psilocybin cults in Europe, and the faerie lore of the Tuatha De Danaan in Ireland all speak of ritual and traditional knowledge that hide underneath the mythic landscape of humanity. The ancients knew more than we do today in terms of what makes a human a human. The writings of ancient Greece are still studied today, as are the ancient Chinese philosophy texts, not for their historical relevancy, but for their modern applications. The I Ching, the Tarot, and the runes are evidence of the transcultural value of logograms and the knowledge and wisdom that can be transmitted through such systems. The Tarot itself, which may be older than any other divination system, (and may only date from the first industrial revolution in Europe, c. 1400 a.d.) contained a wealth of symbolism deciphered by the psychological studies of Carl Jung and the cabbalistic studies published by the Golden Dawn c. 1900 a.d.). Is it easy to maintain the notion that ours is a more advanced age in the face of these issues? Are we now at the pinnacle of knowledge, or are we losing touch more and more by our denial of worth in the legends and lore of the past? It is important to note that encryption, the fastest growing scientific application of numeric principles on the internet, has been traced to the Elizabethan Mage, Dr. John Dee, and his alchemical counterparts. The magical texts of the day were encrypted, and elaborate systems of information encoding was developed by Dr. Dee. The existence of secret orders and fraternities, as far back as the Order of Assassins c. 1023 A.D. implies an existence of encryption and codes, which in turn implies the existence of individuals intelligent and enlightened enough to produce the idea of encryption. Even further back in history, there is the creation of a written language, and the process of converting words and the images the words represented into a graphical symbolic structure. This implies an even greater level of intellectual sophistication, as well as the ability to teach the language to others. A language invented must be distributed to be of value, for a language which cannot be communicated is without value. The Egyptians found language and inscription of language of such great value that they deified the inventor of language. So also did the Sumerians, the Mesopotamians, and the Norse. The Code of Hammurabi still exists today, for it was engraved in stone one letter at a time, it was a system of law that we can even now refer to, for it exists beyond mere mouth noises belched at each other by primitives. It exists as an artwork, an imprint of a governmental body upon a society. Does this imply that even at the dawn of history there were geniuses, intelligentsia of such magnitude as too rival Turing, Einstein, Hawking, and Tesla today? I say yes. Genius does not mean modern, nor does it mean scientific. Genius is beyond and above society, it resides in a different sphere of the human experience, that arena of thought where everything if infinitely worthy of evaluation. Dr. John Dee spoke with spirits by his own admission, conjured lead into gold (one electron difference according to my copy of the periodic table of elements), and brought smoke into forms and faces that others could interact with. By todays paradigm, all of that is superstitious rubbish, if not outright heresy in the eyes of science and theology.
