Just Listen by Rea

"I don’t get you sometimes, Andrea…Why do you have such a problem with going to John’s party? It’s going to be so much fun!" said Jeremy.

"A problem? The problem is, at his parties, it is so loud that you can’t think! Every couple that goes there, doesn’t go there to talk, or socialize, they go there to make out! It’s just so pointless!" She stopped, then slowly began again, "This is why I always hesitate whenever any guy asks me out. Every time, without fail, we end up having this kind of argument. Except with…well, you probably don’t want to hear about my previous boyfriends-" Andrea halted. She wondered why she ever started down this road with every guy. Why couldn’t she just say yes, and go to the party?

"Actually, I would like to hear what magical thing you two had going for you that kept this argument, and others like it from happening. I mean, what could keep this one guy from getting to you in this aspect, and not any other? Please, tell me, I want to stop having these fights…Please?" Jeremy pleaded. He looked at her expectantly, with those blue eyes that had made fall for him in the first place.

"Ok. One guy that I dated, from my church, we almost never fought. When we did, it was over where we should eat dinner, what movie to rent, and it never got to shouting. I’m still not quite positive why, but I think it’s because of two main things. He went to church with me, and he listened to the same music as me. I mean, he sat there and did nothing else but listen to it. I told him I do that, with my favorite groups, so he tried listening too. That was after our first fight. It was a big fight, and our only one. I don’t know…maybe the music helped because it was all alternative Christian. Good groups, I’ve lent you some of the CDs too…I don’t know…" She went silent.

Jeremy just looked at her for a minute, thinking. With her hair falling across her face like that, he saw the reason he had asked her out. And with that speech, he saw why he asked for a second date. The self-confidence, the poise, and the conversations they had had that night…He kissed her forehead, said he was sorry for the fight, and started driving her home. After he dropped her off, he headed homeward. When he got there, the first thing he did was to get on the internet and email her an apology, combined with just telling her why he loved her. After that, he got out her CDs she had lent him, stuck them in his stereo, and listened to them. Just listened…
