“You’re feelin’ stuck
and outta luck,
watchin’ your dreams all slip away.”

Dana Scully almost laughed when she heard the lyrics.
They practically described her life. She shook her
head and went back to washing the dishes, a task that
most people hated. She didn’t mind doing it except for
the fact that it gave her too much time to think.
The previous week she had gotten a message on her
answering machine from Mulder, saying that there was a
giant squid spotted in the sewers of Indiana. He was
going to tag along with Agent Doggett and he’d call
her as soon as he got back.
Scully sighed and rinsed off a plate. She was so
annoyed when she got that message. Mulder was supposed
to have taken her and William to the park that day, as
she hadn’t really been out of the house since he was
born 2 months ago. Lately Mulder was supposed to have
done a lot of things, but never seemed to do them. He
was supposed to help her with dinner one night, but he
never showed and she had to order pizza AGAIN. She had
no time to cook with Will around, and Mulder knew
that. When she asked him about it later, he said
something about getting detained. She had just shaken
her head and not thought about it. But when that sort
of thing had become a everyday occurrence, she started
getting suspicious. His excuses were always rather
vague. It was getting to the point where she was
wondering if she really truly loved him anymore. Her
thoughts were interrupted by another part of the song.

“As your life flies by
you wonder why,
and you know that there’s gotta be somethin’ more!”

This time, Scully DID laugh. That line perfectly
described her thoughts for the last two months. There
has got to be something more for her than a man who
has commitment problems. Just then, the phone rang.
	“Hello?”
	“Dana? It’s John.”
She smiled at the sound of his voice. He had been a
great friend lately. She recently wondered if she
felt more than friendship, but pushed the thought away
out of guilt to Mulder. She focused on the
conversation.
	“Hey John. What’s up?”
“I’m at the airport, an’ I seem to have lost Mulder
back in Indiana.” he said, sounding very annoyed.
Scully sighed. Doggett continued.
“Do ya want me to go back an’ look for ‘im?”
Scully smiled to herself. Doggett was always trying
to do the right thing. He visited her a lot, and baby
sat Will once or twice when she needed to do some
shopping. She thought of Mulder. Mulder never did
anything like that. She walked back into the kitchen
to turn down the radio when the words of the chorus
caught her.

“Hold on,
but don’t hold too tight.
Let go,
it’s gonna be alright.”

She sat for a moment, not really listening as Doggett
told her a bit about the case. Maybe the song actually
had a message for her. Hold on to Mulder, but not as
tight as a lover would, and let go of the piece of her
heart that wanted him to be a lover.

“Don’t run away from what your heart is sayin’”

Don’t run away from what her heart is telling her..
	“Dana? You there?”
	Doggett’s voice interrupted her thoughts.
“Yeah. Sorry. I’m a bit tired.” she said.
“You ok? You want me to bring over dinner or
somethin’?” he asked with concern in his voice. She
smiled to herself, and then suddenly it clicked.

“Don’t run away from what your heart is sayin’”

Her heart had been trying to get a message to her all
along. Those feelings for Doggett, the developing
friendship... Her heart was telling her that he was
the one for her, not Mulder. Mulder was just supposed
to be a friend. Doggett was meant to be more. She
almost laughed out loud at the realization that all
she needed was directly under her nose.

	“DANA!!”
	Scully jumped.
“Sorry. My mind was wandering.” she said. Doggett
chuckled.
“Jeez. You’re more tired than I thought.”
Scully laughed, and then thought for a moment.
	“Hey John?”
	“Yep?”
“For dinner, could you pick up hamburgers?” she
asked.
“HAMBURGERS? I thought you always said that there was
enough fat in there to kill a person after one gulp.”
	Scully grinned.
“I must just be developing good taste all of a
sudden, huh?”
“I’d say. So what do I do about Mulder?”
	“Leave him.”
	“Huh?”
“Leave him there. And if you aren’t here within an
hour, I’m throwing you out there with him.”
“Uh, you sure you feel alright?”
Scully drew in a deep breath.
“Yeah. I just miss you, that’s all.”
Doggett was silent for a moment.
	“John?”
“I miss you too. I’ll be there in a half hour.”
	“Bye.”

Scully hung up the phone. She felt lighter. Smiling,
she went to the radio in time to catch the announcer.
“And that was Hold On, the latest track by B*Witched.
Stay tune now for the Drudge Report.”
Scully smiled and snapped off the radio. Maybe she
would go out and buy a CD by them. They sure helped
her through THIS day. She wondered when Doggett would
show up. He said a half an hour, but that would be
practically impossible. It was about a half an hour
from the airport alone, and half that to get the
hamburgers. Just then, the doorbell rang. She opened
the door to find...
“John? How the...? It’s only been twenty minutes!!”
she exclaimed. Doggett smiled and shut the door.
“Hey. What can I say? I missed you.” he said with a
wink. Scully grinned and gave him a hug. Surprised,
Doggett hugged her back.
“What’s this for?” he asked. Scully looked up at him
and smiled.
“Well, you what they say you should do to to the
people you truly care about.” she said. He cocked his
head at her.
“No. What should they say you should do?”
Scully smiled and hugged him tighter.
	“Hold on.”
