When they met, a bond was formed although it would take time to discover it. Both had loved and lost, both had struggled with believing in faiths and truths that had been their strongholds. In the end, neither could save the one person they loved most.

Now they had both lost sons.

John had been surprised when Dana knocked at his door that night. Any questions he had were erased by the agony apparent on her face.

“Agent Scully?” He held out his hand but she wrapped her arms around him and sobbed.

“I gave him up! John, I let him go! How could I do such a thing?”

She had always seemed so strong. John was almost scared by how fragile she suddenly was. He led her to his couch and helped her to sit down. It was all he knew to do. “Can I do anything, Dana? Anything at all?”

“Would you sit here and hold me?” She reached for him, red eyes shining with sincerity.

“Yeah,” John thought he would feel awkward but Dana didn’t, so why should he?

She snuggled her petite frame against his strong body. Mulder had been willing to comfort her, but she had always felt that she needed to give something in return. Sitting with John, that was not what she felt. He was concerned for her and totally focused.

“Dana, you did what you had to do. I’ve never seen anything so brave and selfless. You love him so much – “

“You understand.” Dana’s eyes locked on John’s. She could feel her heart pounding and her body temperature rising. “How long have we known each other? Two years? You’ve seen me through some of my darkest hours. You helped protect William while he was with me.”

John watched her hand touch his chest. He saw something in the way she looked at him, something new – maybe a reflection of his own soul’s longing. “I protect the people I care about. I think we all do.”

“You care about me?”

“Yeah.”

Dana moved her hands over his shirt. She could feel the muscles in his chest contract and constrict with every breath. Her lips danced over his, teasing every corner. “Prove how much you care.”

John’s eyes had widened from the moment she had touched him but now – this – this had surprised him. Softly biting her lip, he pushed her backwards and ran his hand up her blouse, quickly locating her bra. “Dana, are you…?”

”Absolutely.”

They didn’t need clothes, didn’t want them. They only wanted each other.

“You’re beautiful, Dana.” John whispered as his fingers danced over her skin.

“Not half bad yourself, Agent Doggett.”

“Now, don’t start that!”

John was slow and methodical but Dana wanted him. She positioned his hands where they were needed, “John, it’s just you and me.”

He smiled at the invitation unlike any he had received in a long time. What she had stirred within him was culminating as he touched her body. She knew what made her happy and he gladly obliged.

Neither of them closed their eyes, unwilling to break the spell that was allowing them this night together. John wanted to watch her, wanted to make sure he was doing what she wanted. Dana was thrilled by the ecstasy that seemed to roll over his face as their shared heat increased their attraction.

They shared more than one passionate kiss and grasped each other’s hands, not wanting to relinquish physical contact in any way. The animalistic shouts played like music in their ears, each knowing they were providing the other with the one thing they had been without for so long – desire, pure desire.

“Dana.” Her name was so hushed when he finally spoke she wasn’t sure if she should respond.

“Dana, you okay?”

She stifled a giggle. “I haven’t been this okay in a very long time. But I think that’s because you did most of the work.”

John laid his head against her chest, their bodies still intertwined. “I didn’t expect…I mean…I’ve wanted to…” He rubbed her leg gently, unable to find the words he was searching for.

”I was too blind to see you until now. This was the right time.” Dana lifted her head to his and kissed him. She pulled his body back over hers. “Sometimes a soul has a way of finding its mate.”
