What drove me to write this: Sitting on the shower's floor, thinking about the end of Three Words (don't ask), and the song Lie to Me by Depeche Mode.
Summary: Three Words post episode scene.
Lie to Me
By Lady Nyx Midnight
The door of the car opened with a light click. Doggett didn't need to turn his head to know who it was.
"Knowles," he blatantly said.
"Evening, John," came the reply. "I actually didn't expect you to show up."
Doggett started the engine and pulled the car back on the road, heading away. The radio's barely audible songs was the only thing filling in the silence.
"...So lie to me/ But do it with sincerity/ Make me listen/ Just for a minute/ Make me think/ There's some truth in it/..." came the song on the radio. How appropriate, Doggett thought. As the minutes passed by, slowly, neither man talked, both lost in their own thoughts. "I still wonder what pushed me to show up," Doggett thought aloud after ten minutes of driving aimlessly.
Knowles smiled, but answered nothing. Doggett glanced at him from the corner of his eyes and shook his head. "Full of crap," he muttered.
"Am I?" Knowles replied.
"Damn right," came the reply.
"Why don't you stop here, John," said Knowles, pointing at the entrance of a public park.
Doggett shot him a murderous look, but pulled over and stopped the engine. As Knowles got out of the car, he did the same and sprinted to catch up with him. They stopped on top of a small hill. There they had a nice view of the lake's surface lighted up by the full moon. The moon reflected off the mirror-like surface, making a lovely contrast with the dark silhouettes of the tall trees growing all around the water. A soft, warm breeze was blowing, just enough to slightly ripple the lake's surface.
"You sent me off to get Agent Mulder killed," Doggett started. "To get myself killed."
Knowles shook his head. "I sent you off to help you find the truth. It's not my fault if you almost got caught in the process."
"Then what IS that truth you're telling me about?" Doggett asked impatiently.
Knowles chuckled. "I told you John. I pointed you in the right direction, but you're not looking. the truth could come out, bite you on the ass and run back and you STILL wouldn't know what hit you."
"You set me up!" Doggett accused Knowles.
"I did nothing of that!" Knowles almost shouted.
"If you're innocent then why are you screaming???" Doggett snapped, louder.
"Because you're accusing me without proofs!" Knowles snapped back. Then, in a softer voice, "Come on, John, after all we've been through together, you think I'd let you down like that?"
John opened his mouth to reply but closed it before any word came out and shrugged, looking completely lost and confused. "I don't know who to trust anymore."
Knowles clasped his hand on Dogggett's shoulder. "John," he said softly, "after all these years, you know you can trust me. I gave you the info only to help."
Doggett sighed and looked Knowles in the eyes. Even after all these years, he could never bring himself to say no to the soft, loving look in these brown eyes. Even if his intention was to shove the man away from him, to tell him to go to Hell for all he cared, his resolution melted away as those strong fingers slipped down his arm to gently grab his wrist, as Knowles' other hand caressed his wounded cheek and trailed down to rest on his nape, pulling him forward. He closed his eyes and shivered as Knowles lips' gently brushed over his new scar, before moving down to capture his lips in one of those kisses they had shared countless times, sweet and comforting. The kind of honey-sweet kiss that washes all worries away. And it was still sweet as honey.
But to Doggett, it tasted like poison.
