THE PATRIOT
The Patriot
Mel Gibson, Joely Richardson, Heath Ledger, Jason Isaacs, Gregory Smith, Mika Boorem, Skye McCole Bartusiak, Trevor Morgan
This story follows the life of widower Benjamin Martin a father of seven children during the Revolutionary War. Martin, played by Gibson, is a law-abiding citizen. He wants freedom from England, but he believes that war is not the answer. He refuses to fight until British forces, lead by the cruel coldhearted Colonel William Tavington (Isaacs), burn down his house, capture his son Gabriel, kill another one of his sons, and shoot wounded American soldiers in front of his five remaining children. This means war for Martin. He gathers his sons and they ambush a posse of about 20 British soldiers, and free his son. One soldier survived, and reported the ambush saying that a ghost did it. Therefore giving Martin the name “The Ghost”. He then moves his children to his sister in laws house (Joely Richardson). When his son decides to return to the war Martin goes with him. Martin having fought at Fort Wilderness is given Colonel status, and put in charge of gathering a militia. He and his son gather the roughest of the rough and put them together. They proceed in attacking British supply wagons, and as before the British never knew what hit them. He even steals Lord Cornwallis’s dogs. Martin is a brilliant soldier, and everything is going great until a soldier for the British Army tells them where Martin kids are. They burn down his sister in laws house. After this and another incident involving Martin’s son’s wife (I can’t tell you about it here you just have to see the movie), Gabriel goes after the man that hurt his wife and killed his brother, only to be brutally injured himself. When Martin finds out what happened he vows revenge to Colonel Tavington. In the final battle of the movie Martin faces Colonel Tavington. I will say no more. Everything else is history, as everyone well knows. America won the war.
The Patriot is a very well scripted movie. Writer Robert Rodat did a brilliant job with this movie. The sound effects and action of this movie is absolutely fabulous. The war scenes while graphic depict war perfectly. Mel Gibson came alive as Benjamin Martin. I have never seen a Revolutionary War movie that depicts this war with such passion and energy as The Patriot. This is a must see movie. If you don’t see it you’re missing one of the best movies of the year. This one will be a classic.
