KPWU and Auxiliary to Help Dennis Moore in Reelection Bid
Kansas Postal Workers Union members and Auxiliary members will be helping Dennis Moore with his campaign this fall. Moore, the first democrat elected in the third Kansas congressional district in more than 40 years, is facing a strong opponent in the 2000 election. At the 2000 Kansas Postal Workers Union convention, Moore said this election is extremely important for workers and their families. He urged KPWU members to get involved in his campaign.

“One vote is extremely important,” said Moore. “What happens this year will affect us for years to come.”

When he first ran for Congress, Dennis Moore promised that protecting Social Security and Medicare would be his top priority. He introduced a bill in Congress to take the Social Security surplus "off-budget" and says he will continue to be a leader in the fight to make sure any reform of these programs is fair and sensible.

While supporting tax relief, Moore says a balanced approach is the best way to utilize the budget surplus. Moore voted to end the marriage tax penalty, and to eliminate the estate tax, as well as the earnings limit on Social Security recipients between the ages of 65 and 70. Moore said he wants to return to Congress and continue to fight for tax relief that helps working families, but he said this relief should not return us to the days of deficit spending or jeopardize our ability to pay down the national debt.

“Passing massive tax cuts before the surplus materializes is irresponsible,” said Moore. “An economic downturn would break the bank and return us to the days of deficit spending.”

There are two ways to improve education—involve parents and reduce class size Moore said. Government cannot do the first, but government can provide resources to school districts that would improve facilities and reduce class sizes. Moore said it is extremely important to give students a safe place to learn.<\p>

Dennis Moore is a strong supporter of the Patient's Bill of Rights, which would return medical decisions to doctors and patients, not insurance companies. Moore says an HMO should not be permitted to deny payment for a medical treatment a doctor says is necessary.

The third congressional district includes Wyandotte, Johnson, Miami and Douglas counties.

Kansas Auxiliary Prepares for 2000 Convention
COPA and Human Relations will be the main focus of the Auxiliary to the Kansas Postal Workers Union convention. The auxiliary plans to raffle luggage with all profits going to COPA, the APWU political action fund.

"Since this is a national convention year, we thought luggage would make a great COPA raffle prize," said Betty Shannon, Kansas Auxiliary President.

District 3 Coordinator Mary Lee Duncan will be representing the national auxiliary at the convention. Duncan is also the 1998 Kansas Auxilary Bridge Builder and a life-time member of the KPWU.
