Jeffrey will be conducting the Region IX JH Symphony Orchestra in Houston, Texas on November 21 & 22. In addition to conducting the honor orchestra, he was also commissioned to write a piece to be premiered at the concert.
Look for Jeffrey at the 2003 Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago this December. He will be presenting a clinic on “Successful String Teaching by Non-String Players.” You can also find him lurking around the C-Alan Publications booth, so stop by and say “hi!”

Published Works for String Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra

  • Adagio: In Memoriam 9/11/01 – Grade IV    4:00 Duration
    Published by
    C-Alan
Written in commemoration of those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Adagio is scored for large string orchestra, divisi parts for all but the bass. Slow, brooding, and yet resilient and hopeful, this is a dramatic addition to your concert or contest repertoire.

  • An American Folk Symphony (Symphony for Strings No. 2) - Grade IV    12:00 Duration
(Schedule for publication in 2004 by the Neil A. Kjos Music Co.)
The follow-up to the successful Symphony for Strings No. 1, An American Folk Symphony is a four-movement work based on American folk songs. The movements:
    1. Western Swing (a rollicking 6/8 versus 3/4 rhythmic romp)
    2. Southern Lullaby (my version of “All the Pretty Little Horses”)
    3. Cowboy Waltz (the name says it all)
    4. Shaker Dances (no, not that one!)
Don’t let the titles fool you, this is a very serious work for only the best high school orchestras. Destined to be a classic!

  • Arcane Saga – Grade IV    4:00 Duration
(this piece will be published by Wingert-Jones Music in 2004)

  • Artemis Rising – Grade III    3:00 Duration
    Published by C-Alan
(Commissioned by the Antioch Middle School Orchestra, Shawnee Mission, KS)
String or Full Orchestra, this is a great piece for your middle school or high school group. An exciting rhythmic pulse drives this piece to a thrilling end! Strong, lyrical melodies float over the tension, creating a piece that your students will love!

  • Ballade – Grade III    3:30 Duration
    Published by C-Alan
(Commissioned by the Olathe East High School Orchestra, Olathe, KS)
Here’s a subtle piece for your next concert or contest event. Ballade features a lush viola melody in the opening and closing section. A dramatic melodic line in the upper strings framed by pizzicatos in the cello and bass is featured in the middle of the piece. It closes with strong dissonance into a gentle resolution.

  • Brigid’s Fire – Grade II    2:30 Duration
    Published by C-Alan
Here’s a great piece for your junior high string orchestra. This little d minor piece opens with a brooding suspension that gives way to an energetic melodic line. Interesting parts for everybody (even the basses) make this a great vehicle for studying minor keys and extensions in the classroom setting.

  • Declarations – Grade III    3:00 Duration
    Published by Kjos
Declarations has quickly become one of the most sought after pieces of middle level literature in the country. It has been performed in concert and contests as well as at regional and state orchestra events. It has been performed at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago. A dramatic opening leads to a vibrant, driving melody featured in all the sections of the orchestra. Kids love this piece (especially cellists)!

  • Geminus Sonus – Grade II    2:00 Duration
    Published by C-Alan
Here’s an exciting piece that you won’t grow tired of teaching after a week. Geminus Sonus (literally ‘twin sounds’) features non-divisi double-stops with open strings (that’s right, now that they’re finally not playing on both strings, Jeffrey wants them to)! An exciting concert piece for second or third year players, it has great parts for everyone.

  • Intrepid Procession – Grade I    2:00 Duration
(this piece will be published by Wingert-Jones Music in 2005)

  • Orpheus in the Underworld Overture – Grade III    3:30 Duration
    Published by C-Alan
Jeffrey has arranged Offenbach’s classic with the school orchestra in mind. Playable by full orchestra or strings only (cross-cued heavily), this piece also features Festival Violin, Viola, Cello, and Bass parts for your area festival or big finale at a concert! Can-can? Yes you all can!

  • Prairie Trail – Grade I    1:45 Duration
    Published by Kjos
Here’s a great first or second year piece that your students will love. This little D Major overture gives everybody a shot at the melody (sorry, Jeffrey doesn’t believe that only 1st violinists have the right to play melody). In addition to the music, Kjos also includes teaching materials that help with QPA, NCA, or other state-based assessments.

  • Raven’s Flight – Grade IV    4:30 Duration
    Published by C-Alan
(Commissioned by the Norman (OK) North and Wichita (KS) East HS Orchestras)
Here’s a challenging overture for your advanced high school orchestra. Raven’s Flight is a study in bow speed and tone production. This will be a great piece to challenge those who too often complain of “easy parts.” While challenging, the use of III and V position will be needed in the 1st violins and IV position in the cellos, this is an exciting piece that your top group will love getting into!

  • Rondo Round-Up – Grade II    3:00 Duration
(this piece will be published by Wingert-Jones Music in 2004)

  • Symphony for Strings No. 1 – Grade III    7:00 Duration
    Published by Kjos
(Winner of the 1997 NSOA Composition Contest)
Here’s the piece that started it all for Jeffrey. The first symphony for strings was written for and dedicated to Jeffrey’s mentor Jacque Dillon, director of string pedagogy at Wichita State University. It is now on several state required music lists including Texas, Connecticut, Florida, and Kansas. The outer two movements are a solid grade III, but the middle movement has often been erroneously labeled a grade II or “easy.” Far from the truth, this Renaissance love song is a stretch musically for any serious group of musicians. The movements are:
    1. Sinfonia
    2. Aubade
    3. Reel

  • Three Miniatures for Orchestra – Grade II    5:00 Duration
(this full or string orchestra work based on Jewish folk songs will be published by Wingert-Jones Music in 2005)
