Physical Pain

Discomfort

  • Dizziness, nausea
  • Examination of ears, throat, rectum
  • Arterial or intravenous infusions
  • Nasogastric or urethral drainage
  • Prolonged intubation, tracheostomy
  • Ventilators
  • Postoperative suctioning

    Emotional stress

  • Separation from parents
  • Unpleasant smells, tastes;
  • Vomitus, dressings, medicines, anesthetics
  • Unpleasant sounds
  • Screaming fellow patients
  • Clattering instruments

    Disturbing sights

    • Masked, gowned OR staff
    • Bleeding, crippled, comatose, and moribund comrades
    • Events associated with a Code Blue in the next bed in their room
